2. About Peter Hopton, MD at VeryPC BEng – Specialising in low power electronics Started VeryPC in 2004 Recognised as one of the UK’s top Green IT experts Trips on Green IT missions abroad with the UK FCO and the Global Forum Fellow of the Royal Society Of Arts. Representative for the British Computer Society to EPEAT and DEFRA Part of the British Computer Society DCSG Committee
3. About VeryPC Social Enterprise set up to employ a UK workforce to produce Green IT Patented Technology Factories in Sheffield and Hull Most Energy Efficient High Performance PCs
5. Approx. 1 Watt costs £1 p.a. With rising energy prices the need for using less is becoming more necessary. Green IT is one answer.
6. 1/20/10 ¾ of UK electricity from fossil fuels. Rule of thumb: 1W produced= 5kg of CO2
7. Majority of electronics contain amounts of hazardous and un-ecological materials Image copyright Greenpeace
8. Some material are hazardous to both health & environment Image copyright Greenpeace
9. Greenpeace publish a guide based on hazardous materials content of various companies and their electronic products Image copyright Greenpeace
10. BFR Currently no allowed in central government procurement of desktop PC’s. Still allowed for School procurement. Brominated Flame Retardants are contained in plastics used in the cases of electronics. They are important to use in plastic as they prevent fire. But they cause a health problem – they seep out of the plastics and bio accumulate in the body. Health problems associated with BFR’s include cancer.
11. Flexible PVC Poly Vinyl Chloride & Phthalate Plasticisers PVC is safe, except in burning and manufacture If burnt PVC emits Hydrochloric acid and cyanide gas. Phthalate Plasticisers seep out of flexible PVC and scientific evidence suggests they cause heath problems relating to hormone imbalance.
18. The UK Public Sector is Acting CO2 Reduction Targets are being set throughout UK public sector. Funding is available for energy efficiency projects through Salix The EU have Mandated Energy Star as the minimum standard for public sector procurement DEFRA Quick wins (or Green Ticks) have mandated a minimum standard for reducing toxic content in procurement The UK Government wants IT to be whole of life carbon neutral by 2015
21. What Is Shared Client Technology? 1/20/10 The Power Of A Desktop is Shared to Produce Several Virtual Machines. Low Capital Cost, clients can mix and match with desktops. A Good Example of this technology is Ncomputing or LG Network Monitor
22. Green Desktops & PecoBoo VeryPCBroadLeaf High Performance & Versatile Dual & Quad Core Desktops Powerful graphics and multimedia PecoBootechnology uses a sensor so that the PC starts to enter sleep modes instantly as a user leaves the PC 1/20/10
24. Environmental Points Energy Efficiency Worlds Most Energy Efficient High Performance Desktop Energy Star 5 Compliant (Exceeds by as much as 55%) Toxicity Worlds only DEFRA Quick Wins ‘Class Leader’/Double Green Tick desktop PC BFR free Case, No PVC in Cables. Carbon Footprint Low mileage design, locally produced from low carbon materials Full Lifetime+20% Carbon Offset – Fully Carbon Neutral
It is more important to understand that the wrong materials in electronics can be hazardous to more than ‘the environment’ but to our health and wellbeing – I’m going to talk in more detail as to why later
This is a chart which many of you may have seen, which Greenpeace publish every few months rating various companies on their products material content.
If it isn’t fast enough, or suitable, then it’s going to get replaced sooner. We’re going to generate more waste and use more resources. And the replacement cycle being accelerated is going to cost more money in the long term.
We now get this picture of ‘Eco Efficient IT’, equipment that uses less energy and is made from nicer materials, but there’s something we’re forgetting.
