• Reasons For Adpoting Green Solutions
• Approaches to Green Computing
• Advantages And Disadvantages
• Future Of Green Computing
• Conclusion
3. Green Computing!
"The study and practice of designing,
manufacturing, using, and disposing of
computers, servers, and associated
subsystems efficiently and effectively with
minimal or no impact on the environment."
4.
5. Energy Use of PCs
• CPU uses 120 Watts
• CRT uses 150 Watts
– 8 hours of usage, 5 days a week = 562 Kwatts
– for a large institution, say a university of 40,000
students and faculty, the power bill for just computers
can come to $2 million / year
• Energy use comes from
– electrical current to run the CPU, motherboard,
memory
– running the fan and spinning the disk(s)
– monitor (CRTs consume more power than any other
computer component)
7. E-Waste Statistics
some electronic waste facts:
We generate around 40 million tons of electronic waste
every year, worldwide. That’s like throwing 800 laptops
every second.
An average cellphone user replaces their unit once
every 18 months.
E-waste comprises 70% of our overall toxic waste.
Only 12.5% of E-Waste is recycled.
85% of our E-Waste are sent to landfills and incinerators
are mostly burned, and release harmful toxins in the
air!
Electronics contain lead which can damage our central
nervous system and kidneys.
80% of E-Waste in the US and most of other countries
are transported to Asia.
8. Environmental Effect
Computer is made of Lead,Plastics, mercury etc. these
have bad impact on environment when they are burned
or disposed in open eenviromrnt.
Lead is particularly harmful to child brain development
because it interferes with development of the nervous
system and kidney also.
Mercury may have toxic effects on the nervous,
digestive and immune systems, and on lungs, kidneys,
skin and eyes.
Plastics are difficult to recycle and the production and
burning it generates toxic gases like CO2.
9. Why Green Computing??
Computer energy is often wasteful.
Eg:Leaving computer on when not in use
Printing is wasteful.
Eg: Email/Meeting agenda’s print-out is waste.
Pollution
Eg: Due to manufacturing ,packaging, disposal techniques.
Toxicity
Eg:Due to toxic chemicals involved in manufacturing.
11. Virtualization
Two or more logical
computer systems can
be run on the same
piece of chardware.
So hardware ost will decrease.
12.
13. Power Management
With proper power management, it is
possible to reduce power consumption,
which further leads to a reduction in
carbon emissions.
* Turn off computer when not in use.
* Turn off monitor, don’t use screen
saver, reduce brightness
17. Material
Recycling
•Cellphones and electronic devices contain
precious metals like gold and silver.
•The US alone throws away cellphones with $60
million worth of gold/silver yearly.
•Recycling 1 million laptops saves energy
equivalent to the energy used by 3600 homes
in the US annually.
•Most of the components of E-Waste are
electronic equipments that can be re-used and
recycled for materials recovery.
•Donate your cellphone,laptop,television to
friends,church,schools

• Solar Computing
• Lead-free And RoHS Computing
• Energy Efficient Computing
20. Lead free computing
RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) is a
European Union directive that restricts the use of lead,
mercury, cadmium, chromium (VI) in electrical and
electronic equipment as of July 1, 2006 due to
environmental concern.
It has been calculated that during manufacturing of
computers can 4 to 8 pounds of lead alone.
24. Recent Implementations
Blackle
Blackle is a website created
by Heap Media
It will save 750 Megawatts-
hour per year due to
predominantly black color
Fit-PC
It is fanless
extremely small, very low power and
have more features than any other PC in
their category.
25. Cont…
Sunray thin client
It consumes less electricity (4 to 8 watts)
than conventional Desktop and suited for
cost sensitive environment like call
centres,education ,healthcare
Zonbu
•intel-compatible ultra-low power CPU
•512 MB RAM + 4GB flash-based local
storage
•PC-compatible ports for keyboard and
mouse
•WiFi

28. Future Of Green Computing
The plan towards green IT should include new
electronic products and services with optimum
efficiency and all possible options towards
energy savings.
29. Conclusion
The greenest computer will not miraculously
fall from the sky one day, it’ll be the product of
years of improvements. The features of a green
computer of tomorrow would be like:
efficiency,
manufacturing & materials, recyclability,
service model, self-powering, and other trends.
