6. What is Green?
• Sustainability = Environment, Economy & Society
• Everything you do has a cost
• Not every cost is on your balance sheet
– but some-one some-where some-when will pay
• Eg Carbon emission
– Companies traditionally have not paid for the carbon emitted;
instead left to governments, future generations or less
powerful communities
– But you still pay for the input: energy
– Increasingly companies are being charged for emissions
2 C8H18 + 25 O2 → 16 CO2 + 18 H2O
www.performgreen.co.uk
7. Why is Green important
• Environmental
– The only energy coming into the system is from the sun – everything
else on earth is finite
• Societal
– Disproportionate use of resources by richer segments and
disproportionate impact on poorer segments
• Economic
– Popn growth: Doubled to 7bn in my lifetime. +1bn in next 15 yrs. Will
top 11bn –mostly in Mega Cities
Need to increasingly decouple economic growth from use of
environmental resources and emissions & make Cities work better
www.performgreen.co.uk
8. Why Green Important to
Business (1)?
• Regulation & Taxation
• Financial
– not using what you don’t have to, and therefore not paying for it
– (eg energy consumption) Note Energy Prices
– reusing / repurposing waste, and therefore potentially deriving
income from it or avoiding disposal cost
• (eg recycled waste)
• (eg landfill cost & tax)
M&S in 2011 reported net benefit of £70m due to their
environmental programme, Plan A
- Against £780m declared gross annual profits
www.performgreen.co.uk
9. Why Green Important to
Business (2)?
• Sales
–ability to win / gain business; & brand
B2G: UK public sector procures £220bn pa & demands
sustainable products and services
B2C: More than half of global consumers would prefer to
purchase products and services from a company with a good
environmental reputation
B2B: Businesses working to a sustainablility goal does or will
require their suppliers to do the same
www.performgreen.co.uk
10. Why Green Important to
Business (3)?
• Talent Management
– Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development report
that talent attraction and retention is one of the biggest
problems businesses have
Almost 74% of UK workers would prefer to work for a
company that has a good reputation for
environmental responsibility. [Ipsos Mori 2007 based
on 16,000 interviews across 15 markets)
www.performgreen.co.uk
11. What is Green ICT?
= Green + ICT
• 2% of CO2 emission are from IT
• Current + Cooling
• Whole life costs: Cradle to Grave
www.performgreen.co.uk
12. Why is it important for IT
Organisations?
Increasing pressure to do more with less budget
- Realise savings ...
- Reduce purchasing
- Extend lifecycles to end of life
- Reduce energy use
- Greater utilisation and sharing
- Release capacity & make new investments
And opportunities to do more with ICT & tackle the 98%!
Eat less, Exercise more & Become an Olympic athlete
www.performgreen.co.uk
19. So where do you start?
• Understand your impacts from stuff you use
• Footprints
• Assets lists
• Footprint workbooks/models
• and boundaries
• the Service Wrap...
• & the Supply Chain ?
• Check impacts of work in hand
• Efficiencies => Energy & Carbon savings
• Identify hot-spots and make the case for action

• Just change the margins to ‘narrow’
• On word this = 20%!
www.performgreen.co.uk
31. Data Centres
• Turn the thermostat up!
• Improve ventilation
• Cull or archive active data: eg smaller active mail
box sizes
• Helps information security too!

33. And then....
IT is 2% of the problem – use IT to tackle the other
98%!
• To transform to Greener ways of working
• To be more agile and responsive to client needs
• To do more virtual working ..... (if only!!)
To do more with less!

34. Laptop vs Desktop
• 1 device:
• a laptop
• Flexible working practices:
• 60% in office so only 60% lit / heated space
• Phones:
• Mobile & Landline??

36. Natural England travel savings
2,700 staff in NE across some 50 locations
Overall sought 50% reduction in footprint
Huge travel mileage or around 14m kms!
For every kilometre travelled emitted 157 g of carbon
Average distance between all NE offices is 159 miles
=> a round trip for an attendee of 318 miles or
512km = 512 x 157 = 80 kg of CO2
Estimate each attendee would spend approximately
£44.52 to attend a meeting based on a round trip of
318 miles.

impacts lie
• Recognise you can’t sit on the fence
• Challenges and opportunities
• Quick wins and visibility
