2. What is Green IT?
Green IT is a collection of strategic and tactical
initiatives that directly reduces the carbon footprint of
an organization’s computing operations.
(Source: Mark G. O’Neill, 2001)
It is a study and practice of using computing resources
in an environmentally efficient way.
Green IT Issues
According to Lorenz Hilty and Wolfgang Lohmann, 2011
stated the five most neglected issues in Green IT are as
follows:
A lack in the transparency of energy cost in
Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
services.
The material demand of ICT hardware Production.
Insufficient understanding of ICT life cycle.
Rebound effects and the role of software.
ICT as a critical infrastructure.
Green IT Challenges
According to Pete Foster and Jane Whitehead, 2013
stated some Green IT challenges:
2008 estimates reckoned that emissions from
manufacturing, transporting, using and disposing of
ICT equipment accounted for 2% of global greenhouse
gas emissions.
This was expected to rise to 3% in 2020 which is
almost three times the total UK emissions in 2009.
In 2007 ICT equipment accounted for 10% of the UK’s
electricity consumption.
3. A lot of the power used by IT is simply wasted.
Estimates suggest that up to a quarter of all PCs are
left running 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Many
servers are doing no useful work at all and still use
60% of their maximum power load when idle.
Green IT Solutions
According to Pete Foster and Jane Whitehead, 2013
stated some Green IT solution to the above given
challenges are as follows:
Using less IT energy will help you save money, comply
with corporate strategy and meet sustainability
targets.
There are lots of things you can do, from installing PC
power management software to a complete data
centre re-fit.
You need to start by making sure your Green IT
department is responsible for its own power bills.
Also, Green IT is not a problem; in fact it’s a solution
itself.
