3D Printing / Additive Manufacturing bring adaptiveness and flexibility to manufacturing. Smart Factories can use 3DP to produce almost anything. 3DP, however, is still a slow production process. How to overcome this limitation? Well, if one printer is not enough, then we should use a lot of printers! Print Farms will become more and more a common solution in Industry 4.0.

- Who in the audience has jobs related with Manufacturing? And of those who are in manufacturing, who is already aware of the potential of 3D Printing? Last question, who has already heard about Print Farms? Ok, that´s exactly about Print Farms that I will very briefly talk about. So, next time someone asks you if you´ve heard about Print Farms, you all have to asnswer yes!
- I guess you are all familiar with our evolution from Industry 1.0: 1st Mechanized Production – late 18th century: using water and steam power, and having the mechanized loom has the most well known symbol 2nd Mass Production – late 19th century: with the help of electric power and the division of labour 3rd Automated Production – late 20th century: electronics and computers to further automate production 4th Smart Factory - starting now: All elements of the manufacturing process are able to communicate with each other, thus the smart factory. One of these elements is 3D Printing, which brings an extra level of adaptiveness and flexibility to the whole process.
- 3D printing is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file. It´s also called additive manufacturing since all technologies, so far, produce the objects by laying down successive layers of material until the object is completed.
- If you cannot solve your smart factory needs with one 3D printer, then solve it with a lot of 3D Printers!!! What you need to do is have the number of printers needed to ensure the normal flow you want in the assembly line.
