Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the pancreas produces little to no insulin. It can occur at any age from infancy to late thirties and requires lifelong insulin treatment. The symptoms of type 1 diabetes include extreme thirst, frequent urination, weight loss, and nausea/vomiting. Type 1 diabetes onset resembles the flu and requires immediate medical care if left untreated as it can lead to the life-threatening condition of diabetic ketoacidosis. There is currently no cure for type 1 diabetes.
