R E C A P
In the previous lesson, we learned that a
sentence that gives the stand or position of a
writer on an issue or topic is called thesis
statement. This signals or informs the reader of
what the essay is about. Now, a writer needs to
organize his paper so that thoughts, ideas and
information are properly conveyed or understood.
L E S S O N
A good essay has systematized pattern.
This should be observed with the way the
writer presents all information in his writing.
One way of organizing our ideas is to
structure them by fleshing out the main
points in our paper.
In this lesson, you will learn how to outline ideas in
writing your essay. Before writing your paper, it is
important that you arrange your flow of ideas so it is just
easy for you to discuss in your paper. Before a writer
makes an essay or any academic text, he organizes his
notes and ideas by arranging them using numbers or
letters. This is called an outline. This method allows the
writer to visualize the content of his paper, like an idea
map. Writing key words or ideas that are to be found in
each paragraph, guides the writer on what he is to write.
Let us say, you are writing an essay in science, specifically lasers
in medicine:
Thesis statement:
Lasers in medicine have so much improved the way of life of
people
I. Origins and uses
II. Definition and explanation
III. Medical uses of lasers
In this example, the writer now has a clear idea of
how his paper is going to be written. First, he establishes
his thesis statement. Second, to be able to develop his
paper, he divides his ideas by writing about the history of
lasers, and assigned roman numeral I for this point. The
body discusses about the definition of lasers and the
benefits of lasers as applied in medicine. Writing your
ideas this way, organizes your train of thought well, thus
creating a well-written and understandable essay.
There are also two ways in writing an
outline: The first one is a topic outline which is a
brief outline of ideas using keywords. Under the
heading are several words served as sub topics
that will be discussed in the paper.
Look at this example:
I. Micro- Business Today
A. Unemployment
B. Definition of Micro Business
C. Benefits of Micro Business
II. Prospects in Micro Business
A. Industry
B. Agribusiness
C. Services
III. Procedures in opening a Micro Business
A. Finances
B. Business permits
C. Location
Another is the sentence outline. The topic for each paragraph is written
in sentence form instead of key words. Study this example:
I. Micro business is becoming a popular livelihood among Filipinos
A. Engaging in micro business helps solve unemployment in the
country.
B. Micro business is an industry that works on small scale.
C. Micro business offers many benefits such as flexibility,
uniqueness expertise, etc.
II. Micro business offers many opportunities for livelihood.
A. Industries like food and restaurant, general retail, health
fitness are good for micro business
B. In agribusiness, there are organic crop farming, vegetable
cultivation and ecotourism business to name some.
C. For service industry, there are landscaping and horticulture,
hotels and other places of lodging, dry cleaning, hair cutting, etc.

Let’s try a few items as practice
exercise. Tell the topic outline of
these excerpts:
1. The first and most important thing about
effective studying is time management. Once
you’ve learned the method – one of the
numerous suggested by specialists in this field or
one of your own invention – you may happily and
effectively keep using it for the rest of your life.
Be realistic, don’t put the things off until the last
moment, you are most likely to spend more time
on them than you could have predicted and it will
lead to no end of trouble.
Time management is the topic here, so the
topic outline that the writer has used here is time
management. Notice how the writer discussed
points about time management. He mentioned
on what one must do to prioritize things that are
needed to be done.

2. First of all, Education teaches the ability to read and
write. Reading and writing is the first step in Education.
Most information is done by writing. Hence, the lack of
writing skill means missing out on a lot of information.
Consequently, Education makes people literate. Above
all, Education is extremely important for employment. It
certainly is a great opportunity to make a decent living.
This is due to the skills of a high paying job that
Education provides. Uneducated people are probably at
a huge disadvantage when it comes to jobs. It seems
like many poor people improve their lives with the help
of Education.
The sentence outline here is:
The importance of education in life is shown in
various ways.
After reading this paragraph, we understood that not
only education makes a person literate but being
educated helps us land a good job.

A. Read the following
paragraphs and choose the
best topic or sentence outline
for each item.
1. I believe in the power of kindness. I believe the
simplest acts of generosity can make the world a
better place. Kindness can be the easiest part of
your life. Anyone can be kind, and there is no
excuse not to be. Whether you tell your friend you
like her dress, or pay for the person behind you in
line, kindness should be in everybody’s lives. I
believe in the power of kindness to change the
world.
A. Generosity
B. Kindness
C. Power of Kindness
2. “Kill them with kindness” is an infamous quote I like to refer to in
my daily life. There is no reason to have drama with somebody. If
somebody chooses to dislike you, bully you, or just be mean in
general, just be kind. There is no reason to fight back. If you act like
you don’t care, it makes them look worse and you will look like the
nicest person ever. If you just act kind to people, they will treat you
the same. My mom always taught me to live a drama free life. If you
are angry, vent to a parent or best friend and let it go. Life is too
short to hold grudges. My life is filled with kindness because I rarely
get into a fight with anyone. All it takes is kindness. Treat people with
kindness and respect, and you will get the same in return.
A. How to treat people with kindness
B. Ways to kill with kindness
C. Kindness and respect
3. My dad always told me to live life like a camera is watching you at all times. What he said really stuck
with me because if I were on camera, I would want to seem as generous as possible. As a result, I
always try to give random acts of kindness and see people’s excited expressions. I believe that
performing random acts of kindness is the best way to strengthen the power of kindness. One night,
me and my five best friends Jessie, Ana, Julia, and Jillian were at the 99’s. There was an old man sitting
all by himself, and we overheard the waitress say ¨happy birthday to him. Depressed that he was all
alone on his birthday, my friends and I decided to pay for his bill. Just that simple act of kindness made
this man's entire birthday. He, as well as the other waiters, were all so impressed with us girls. Everyone
came up to us after he left thanking us for showing kindness towards a stranger. In return, the waitress
thought we were awesome for being raised the right way, she gave us free dessert!
One night, my sister Madison, her friend Grace, and our dance teacher Nikki went out to dinner. The
whole night they were having so much fun that they didn't even think to go on their phone all night.
One guy sitting at a different table happened to notice how much fun they had without technology, he
decided to pay for their meal. He thought it was amazing how much fun they were having. This act of
kindness by the man made their day so much better, and they came home to tell everyone about it.
Random acts of kindness like that is what makes happier people all around.
A. Acts of kindness are not taught.
B. Acts of kindness are unplanned and simple.
C. Acts of kindness are innate to people.
4. The Philippine government on March 17, 2020
declared a State of Calamity throughout the country for
the period of six months due to COVID-19 global
pandemic. An enhanced community quarantine
covering the entire Luzon Island was imposed until
April 14, 2020, requiring mandatory home quarantine

5. NASSA/Caritas Philippines, as a humanitarian organization,
invited our network from the social action centers of the dioceses
and our colleagues from the civil society organizations to
mobilize our communities to prioritize the targets and reach out
to the neediest. This is a concrete way to localize our
humanitarian response. The idea of caritas kindness station is to
decentralize the humanitarian response - so that the
communities themselves help the needy, and not through the
usual top-to-bottom approach or the donor-to-beneficiaries
framework of providing relief assistance.
