We have chosen this topic because all members of the group are related to
electronic world and devices.
What is electronic waste?
- Discarded electrical or electronic devices.
- Used electronics which are destined for reuse, resale, salvage, recycling or disposal.
- Planned obsolescence have resulted in a fast-growing production of e-waste.
What we know about e-waste?
- Few information
- Lack of green sites
- Tend to buy new electronic devices
- Easy to buy, hard to repair
E-waste background
- E-waste is around the 5% of all solid waste
worldwide.
- Only around 12.5% of e-waste is being
recycled.
- The process of dismantling e-waste leads to
several environmental hazards.
- Groundwater and river pollution and
hydrocarbon emissions.
Are you aware of electronic waste?
- To check people’s awareness about e-waste, a quiz has been created.
- We reported 24 samples about respondents, most of them university students.
Quiz’s scoring system
- The respondent has a feedback depending on the answers provided
Below [17 ]
- Congratulations! You are taking seriously this topic! You are very aware and conscious on how E-
waste should be treated and processed. Keep on it!
Between [ 18 and 24 ]
- You are keeping a good pace about the use and awareness of E-waste but you can go further to
protect, even more, the environment!
Above [ 25 ]
- You have no care about environmentalism! E-waste is very polluting to our environment and it
shouldn’t be ignored so start recycling and taking a more active role on this topic.
Conclusion
- When their devices are broken, people tend to buy a new one, but they prefer to keep with them the
old ones.
- In general terms, they are aware about the e-waste, but they don’t participate in an active manner.
- Governments and institutions should promote e-waste concerns and long-term risks.
