How the learning space can become an inclusive learning space – Lessons from Europe... USA and Latin America
Presented at CAVA2018, 21-24 August 2018 in Medellin, Colombia.
The purpose of our paper is to share the experiences of DCPL’s pilot digital skills project, based in inner city Dublin, and to show that it is possible to establish a digital skills project which is consciously inclusive and can accommodate children and young people with differing learning abilities as well as different socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
The national strategy Our Public Libraries 2022 emphasises the role that libraries can play in bridging the digital divide in Ireland. Libraries are ideally placed to deliver the necessary digital skills and to access the technology that is imperative for participation in the digital society.
In terms of the outreach activities, we identified the CoderDojo model as being the most suitable method of delivering digital skills to a diverse group on an on-going basis. We work with DEIS schools and community groups, such as those who work with children in direct provision, to recruit participants for whom the experience would be most beneficial and empowering. By providing a familiar space within the area, the aim is to make digital learning accessible and welcoming.
We consciously cultivate a family-friendly environment for our Saturday “Dojo”, encouraging accompanying parents to make use of the library’s facilities and bring along younger siblings. For our mid-week, “Teen Dojo”, teens are introduced to project-based work, where outputs include tangible results, which keep teens engaged as what is being learned has ‘real world’ applications.
Our experience with respect to the learning approaches used and the communities’ reception to the providing of digital learning opportunities to children in areas with diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds has multiple implications, including what value can be found in self-directed learning with this particular cohort and what benefits that exposing these children to the skills necessary for the future of work can be had.

In multiple surveys, McGill’s community of site managers and editors expressed an eager interest in ensuring our digital spaces support and align with McGill’s equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI)-related strategic goals. They’ve also told us they’re not sure what steps to take to make that happen.
To encourage an actionable understanding of what equity, diversity and inclusion means in digital spaces, McGill’s Equity Office collaborated with the unified Web Services team (Communications and External Relations partnered with IT Services) to produce resources and training for our 1400+ site managers and editors. Come learn about our process and outcomes and get tips to:
- Help your community understand how EDI considerations can influence website management.
- Foster skills for applying EDI concepts to websites.
- Promote familiarity with your institution’s equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) strategies

Teaching and learning at universities has moved beyond traditional transfer of knowledge from the learned to the learning. In today’s rapidly evolving world, educators at higher education institutions are challenged with preparing students to succeed in jobs that don’t even exist today, in a world in which creativity and innovation are valued as much as knowledge.
What does it take to do this? What are the latest trends in teaching and learning at higher education institutions? Are they keeping up with the transformations taking place beyond campus boundaries? What are the strategies for broader adoption of effective teaching and learning practices across campus?
UCalgary's Vice-Provost of Teaching and Learning (Interim) Leslie Reid and Jay Cross, Director of the new College of Discovery, Creativity and Innovation in UCalgary's Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning, provide their expert knowledge on these and other related questions.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
