Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy and worked with his father as a cloth maker before running away to join a ship. On his first voyage to find a western passage to Asia in 1492, Columbus captained the Santa Maria alongside the Nina and Pinta. The Santa Maria ran aground on Christmas, forcing Columbus and his crew to return to Spain on the Nina. Columbus made three subsequent voyages, establishing settlements in the Americas and dealing with rebellious natives and crew. He died in 1506 in Spain, never having set foot on what is now the continental United States.
