The Dust Bowl was caused by new farming techniques that made topsoil vulnerable to strong winds during a serious drought in the 1920s. This kicked up massive dust storms carrying millions of tons of dirt, damaging over 50 million acres of land. The storms destroyed farms and forced people to breathe dusty air, causing health problems and even death. Many people lost their land and livelihoods because they couldn't afford to keep their farms during the difficult times of the Dust Bowl.
