The Dust Bowl was a destructive period in American history during the 1930s. Powerful dust storms swept across the Great Plains, destroying homes and farms. People were forced to abandon their towns as dust storms reaching 70 mph ripped roofs off houses and buried structures and fields in sand. Families suffered tremendous hardships as they lost loved ones, homes and livelihoods during the Dust Bowl, with many children having to make new friends after being displaced. Even after the Dust Bowl ended, families still faced difficulties returning to their ruined homes and properties covered in sand.
