- 2. This started when • The nutrients were removed from the soil • Wind erosion took place • Lastly there was a drought
- 3. What the dust did • Over 500,000 people were homeless • Many families had to move away from the great plains • Farmland and homes were destroyed • People were left hungry
- 4. Response • Many citizens left their homes in jalopies • Began a great migration to the west • Many people died from malnutrition and other illnesses
- 5. The governments response • F.D.R created a soil erosion service in 1933 to prevent this from happening • The new deal enforced the effort • Government subsidized farmers to distribute livestock for food
- 6. The outcome • It had a long lasting economic effect but programs pulled the nation back • The acts are still in effect today protecting farmers and soil
