Talk held by Vic Ventures at City University, Cass Business School, as part of the BSc Management degree, on designing innovative business models and systems thinking.
Thinking in three's feb 15 intersection highlightBernard Mohr
The document introduces three types of thinking: Business Thinking, Design Thinking, and Appreciative Thinking. Business Thinking uses logical and deductive reasoning to look for precedents and make quick decisions. Design Thinking is more intuitive and abductive, unconstrained by the past as it asks "what if?" and holds multiple possibilities. Appreciative Thinking assumes past proof, is relational and integrative, and energized by the past as it holds infinite possibilities and invites paradox.
We face a digital reality today where our operational model is being extended but not, as much as its theoretical domain. In order to survive in this brand new ecosystem our profession has to adapt but not necessarily to change. We have to rediscover our inherited quality of asking “what”. Because the strength of our profession lies in our ability to turn “what if” in “what is”.
The third part of this presentation asks:
What really happened to communication strategy by the digitalization of our world?

The document summarizes a presentation by Timothy Chan on the changing roles of designers from designers to designpreneurs. The presentation discusses how design thinking is shifting designer's roles from a focus on aesthetics to problem solving. It also explores how designers need to take a whole brain approach, utilizing both analytical and creative skills, to become designpreneurs that can manage brands and businesses. The presentation aims to nurture future designpreneurs by teaching multi-disciplinary, dimensional and functional skills.
Design for business Impact: How design triggers transformationfrog
This document discusses how design can trigger business transformation. It argues that design goes beyond just drawing and sketching, and should be viewed as a management philosophy that drives innovation. The document outlines how design can provide tangible solutions to address change, help test ideas, and inspire communication. It also discusses challenges such as resistance to new ideas, focusing too much on incremental improvements, and the importance of differentiating products through excellent design.
The document provides an overview of the role of an account executive in advertising. It discusses what account executives do, including liaising with clients to understand their needs, developing creative briefs to provide direction to creative teams, and ensuring effective communication between the client and various agency departments. The document also provides some advice for those wanting to work in advertising, such as finding work you love, managing your personal brand, and leveraging your unique background and experience to develop new ideas.
Web content: it's the meat in the sandwich, not the icing on the cake. Too often, organizations fail to deliver content that meets user needs and serves their business goals. Even during website redesigns, the editorial process gets short shrift in favor of building new features and creating new designs. Thinking about the content is always left until the last minute, always thought to be "somebody else's problem."
These are session keynote Karen McGrane's slides from her portion of the presentation. Thanks for coming!
This document proposes a framework for designing products and services for people at the bottom of the economic pyramid. It involves understanding the constraints and aspirations of those living in poverty, evaluating existing approaches that either design for or help the poor design for themselves, and creating new collaborative models in partnership with community organizations to design solutions that are socially and economically beneficial.
In this presentation we explore the link between business need and customer need and how to innovate (and remove business problems or discover business opportunities) through persona creation and Design Thinking
The document provides an overview of services offered by Genesis UnLtd, a strategic branding and consumer diagnostics consultancy firm. It details Genesis' work in various business categories including FMCG, rural, lifestyle, retail, media brands, and corporate brands. Key services listed are strategic consulting, ideation, research, design solutions, and creative services. Examples of clients and projects conducted across categories like FMCG, retail, media are also provided.
This document provides an overview of business models and entrepreneurship. It discusses that a startup is different than an established company in that a startup solves unknown problems while a company solves known problems. It emphasizes the importance of testing hypotheses with customers and being willing to pivot the business model based on what is learned. Key lessons discussed are that the business model can determine success or failure, business models need to be designed and tested with customers, and startups should focus on learning and adjusting rather than rigidly executing a pre-determined plan.
How design can add value and brand to a start up?Ganesh Burle
The document discusses how design can add value and brand to startups. It notes that 80% of young companies fail within 18 months, often due to a lack of focus on design. Design is important for startups to discover the right business model for their innovation. Design thinking is described as combining creative and analytical thinking to solve problems, and should involve everyone, not just designers. The document recommends startups sketch many ideas, create prototypes to facilitate conversations, test before launching, and have designers involved from the founding stage.
This document discusses user experience design and how it is about more than just aesthetics or interfaces. It is about designing assets that attract, engage, acquire, and retain users through emotional connections and conversions. It discusses how UX design considers psychology, technology, creativity, and more to create seductive and addictive designs. It also outlines the services a company called Param UX Catalyst provides, including corporate websites, ecommerce sites, apps, and how they take a process-driven and strategic approach to creative solutions.
Within 5 years, 70% of PC collaboration apps will be modeled after smartphone apps due to lessons in user experience. By 2014, social networking will replace email as the primary communication method for 20% of business users. Through 2015, only 25% of enterprises will routinely use social network analysis to improve performance. Ideation involves openly submitting ideas, focused campaigns, or integrating with product development. Typical processes involve expanding internal and external participation. Benefits include new solutions, needs, enthusiasm, and long-term employee satisfaction and focus. Creating the right culture requires tearing down walls, rules of engagement, recognition, and accessibility. Vendor selection involves evaluating functionality, compatibility, price, history and clients. Success requires collaboration between IT and business.

With many organisations re-thinking the execution of their innovation lifecycles in an attempt to gain better productivity, some of the key questions that keep recurring are:
• When does a BA get allocated to a new business initiative?
• When does the business initiative become a project and require some form of project management?
• How does enterprise analysis fit into the systems development lifecycle?
• Who creates a business case?
• Who is assigned first: PM or BA?
Robin Grace, a business analysis principal consultants at IndigoCube, contributor to an IIBA white paper, CBAP, and author of Aligning Business Analysis, Assessing business analysis from a results focus, tells all.
1. The document discusses the importance of design thinking in managing information and business communication. It emphasizes generating alternatives rather than just choosing between them.
2. Designing is about shaping contexts rather than taking them as given. Successful companies exploit design thinking in all their decisions by choosing design as their fundamental strategy.
3. The document provides lessons learned from experts in design, including the importance of empathy, inspiration from analogous situations, and engaging stakeholders in experimentation and storytelling.
