The National Education Policy of 2020 aims to transform India's education system by 2040. It provides a comprehensive framework for elementary education through higher education. The policy emphasizes research, innovation, and entrepreneurship at higher education institutions. It encourages placing greater emphasis on interdisciplinary teaching and research. Masters and PhD programs will enhance skills like grant writing. Only accredited institutions can offer PhD programs. The policy also aims to increase India's global ranking in innovation from its current position of 46 to within the top 25 nations. HEIs will focus on research and innovation by setting up start-ups, technology centers, and increasing industry partnerships through interdisciplinary work.

modified in 1992
•Since then, major changes have been observed in the world and in our
country and; the education policy needed to be modified as per the

5. RESEARCH, innovation and entrepreneurship for HEIs
•The definition of university will thus allow a spectrum of institutions that range
from those that place equal emphasis on teaching and research i.e., Research-
intensive Universities, those that place greater emphasis on teaching but still
conduct significant research i.e. Teaching-intensive Universities
6. APPROACH TO ENERGISE RESEARCH PROGRAMMES
•Masters and Doctoral programmes will also be significantly enhanced by being
located in vibrant multidisciplinary communities, by the breaking of silos.
•Focus their research and coursework on more interdisciplinary subjects; relevant
research that helps local, State and National communities;
•Doctoral students may be engaged significantly in providing academic support
to undergraduate students.
7. Continued…
•Course work for graduate programmes (both Doctoral and Masters)
will aim to develop relevant skills and ethics in students (e.g. an
understanding of what constitutes innovation, academic honesty, and
non-plagiarism, and write proposals for grants).
•Only accredited institutions will be permitted to have PhD
programmes.
•NRF will provide prestigious fellowships for postdoctoral
fellows to pursue high quality research at universities
8. NEP 2020- RESEARCH PROGRAMMES
•HEIs will have the flexibility to offer different designs of Master’s programmes:
(a) A 2-year programme with the second year devoted entirely to research for those who have
completed the 3-year Bachelor’s programme;
(b) For students completing a 4-year Bachelor ’s programme with Research, there
could be a 1-year Master’s programme; and
(c) An integrated 5-year Bachelor’s/Master’s programme.
Undertaking a Ph.D. shall require either a Master’s degree or a 4-year Bachelor’s degree with
Research.
Internationalization
•Provide greater mobility to students in India who may wish to visit, study at,
transfer credits to, or carry out research at institutions abroad (Student/faculty exchange
programmes)
9. Research, INNOVATION and entrepreneurship for HEIS
•Despite this critical importance of research, the research and innovation
investment in India is, at the current time, only 0.69% of GDP as compared to 2.8%
in the United States of America, 4.3% in Israel and 4.2% in South Korea.
•On Global Innovation Index (GII) 2021, India’s rank is 46 while China is far ahead
of us at 12
•Aspire to be within top 25 in next 5 years

11. Role of Pedagogy
It aims to facilitate a pedagogy that makes education
•experiential,
•holistic,
•integrated,
•inquiry-driven,
•discovery-oriented,
•learner-centered,
•discussion-based,
•flexible,
Thus instigating a sense of problem-solving and an attitude of innovation in
students, instead of indulging in herd mentality.
14. Creativity, innovation and entrepreneurs
Creativity is thinking new things, and innovation is doing new things
Creativity is the ability to develop new ideas and to discover
new ways of looking at problems and opportunities.
Innovation is the ability to apply creative solutions to those
problems and opportunities in order to enhance people’s
lives or to enrich society
Entrepreneurship = creativity + innovation
15. Creativity, innovation and entrepreneurs
Entrepreneurship is the result of a disciplined, systematic process of applying
creativity and innovation to needs and opportunities in the marketplace.
Entrepreneurs are those who marry their creative ideas with the purposeful
action and structure of a business.
•It is important to be knowledgeable, but even more important is to take a step to
implement that knowledge.
•The National Innovation and Startup Policy 2019 is a guiding framework to
enable the institutes to actively engage students, and faculties in innovation and
entrepreneurship related activities.
16. Entrepreneurial revolution in the NEP
It aspires to make young generation more
•imaginative,
•innovative,
•ingenious,
•proactive,
•pioneering,
•prospect oriented.
This is at the core of entrepreneurship and is also a competence that all students must have,
regardless of career choice.
Higher education must form the basis for knowledge creation and innovation
thereby contributing to a growing national economy.
