The Mohawk Towpath Scenic Byway Coalition supports the City of Cohoes' plan to revitalize the Cohoes Visitor Information Center. The partnership between Cohoes, the Cohoes Local Development Corporation, Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, and the Mohawk Towpath Byway will increase tourism, integrated programs and activities, and preservation of historic canal structures and cultural heritage. The revitalized Visitor Center can serve as an orientation point and venue for activities about Cohoes' history, culture, and businesses. This project will revitalize the Visitor Center, improve historic canal structures, develop educational programs, and market these efforts to position Cohoes as a major Capital District tourist destination.

The Mohawk Towpath Scenic Byway Coalition supports the City of Cohoes’ plan to
revitalize the Cohoes Visitor Information Center. The Visitor Center is a valuable asset
for Cohoes and the Capital Region and is an eastern gateway to the Mohawk Towpath
Byway. Various planning studies, volunteer initiatives, and our Byway’s experience has
clearly shown the need for and importance of a revitalized Visitor and Information
Center in downtown Cohoes. The partnership of the City of Cohoes, the Cohoes Local
Development Corporation, Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor and the Mohawk
Towpath Byway will result in increased tourism, integrated programs and activities as
well as preservation of historic canal structures and cultural heritage of the Canals and
the City of Cohoes.
From canal tours to farmers' markets, the City can be a draw for everyone from
international travelers to local schoolchildren. The Cohoes Visitor and Information
Center can be a focal point for visitor orientation, information about the city's historical
and cultural features and local businesses, and a venue for a variety of activities,
programs, and exhibits.
With major themes of canals, transportation and water power this project will include
revitalization of the Cohoes Visitor Center, improvements at various historic canal
structures, development of educational/interpretive programs and provide a marketing
plan to promote these programs and activities. This project will position the City of
Cohoes to become a major player in the Capital District’s efforts to become a world
class tourist destination.
