Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan was a Pakistani nuclear physicist and metallurgical engineer who is known as the father of Pakistan's nuclear program. He studied physics in Pakistan and Belgium, gaining expertise in metallurgy and gas centrifuges. Khan helped establish Pakistan's uranium enrichment and nuclear weapons programs in the 1970s. He oversaw the building of Pakistan's first nuclear weapons and the secret Kahuta Research Laboratories, culminating in Pakistan's first successful nuclear tests in 1998 in response to Indian tests. Khan received high honors and awards for his role in making Pakistan a nuclear power.
