This presentation was delivered at the QualityWatch seminar: 'Allied health professionals: can we measure quality of care?' on 12 November 2014. Allied health professionals (AHPs) are a group of 12 distinct professions that form a critical part of health care. By 2013 AHPs had made up around 6% of the NHS workforce and accounted for an estimated £2bn of the NHS salary bill. The role that AHPs play in delivering care is likely to increase further into the future as the population ages and people live with more complex needs. Yet despite the size of the workforce and the broad scope of care, there is very little systematic information available to describe the quality of care delivered by AHPs. It offers functionality like chemotherapy protocol management, electronic prescribing, and connecting to other systems.

The Global eHealth Research and Innovation Cluster at the University of Newcastle aims to lead research, development, translation and commercialization of health technology. It brings together experts from various organizations and disciplines to develop collaborative solutions to health challenges. The Cluster coordinates several research centers focused on areas like informatics, rural mental health, nutrition, and more. It also organizes industry seminars and roundtables to foster partnerships between academics and businesses to translate research.

To improve coordinated care, Nurse Maude developed the Community Care Clinical Management System (CCMS) to share patient data across primary and secondary care providers. CCMS includes a clinical documentation system that uses standardized terminology and allows for mobile access. It aims to improve outcomes measurement, quality monitoring, and consumer access to health information. Nurse Maude also implemented a clinical documentation system on their Dynamics CRM platform to streamline charting for community nurses.

General practices currently feel under significant pressure due to increased workload, expectations, and a declining share of NHS funding over the last decade.
