T
he innovative double
degree Master’s in In-
ternationalisation pro-
gramme offered by WIT is
designed to support new in-
ternational business oppor-
tunities for students in the
south-east.
Ireland’s export economy
hascreatedasetofworldclass
companies and a supporting
eco-system of SMEs that has
resulted in demand for inter-
nationally-orientated busi-
ness graduates. In response,
WIT has to developed new
programmes to give students
the opportunity to study and
spendtimeinothercountries.
All of WIT’s programmes
now incorporate an inter-
national study experience,
while students registered on
its MBS Internationalisation
programme have the oppor-
tunity to study a number of
common modules with stu-
dents on the Master of Inter-
nationalBusinessprogramme
atESCBretagneBrestBusiness
School in France.
Twoofthesharedmodules
are delivered directly to the
combined student cohort –

Due to the extent of joint
study and research involved,
studentsonbothprogrammes
receivedegreesfrombothcol-
leges – a double degree, part
of a Joint Awarding Authori-
ty Agreement between WIT
and QbQI in Ireland and ESC
Bretagne Brest in France.
ProfessorDenisHarrington,
head of Graduate Business at
WIT,said:“Thiscoursebrings
graduatestothecutting-edge
of the discipline by offering
an international programme
of study incorporating mod-

negotiations, international
strategy and foreign direct
investment.
“Wemaintainanactivecol-

ment with the international
businessandstrategyprocess
and this forms a key part of
theprogramme.Studentsalso
work on integrated projects
with commercial companies
and start-up entrepreneurs
in our business incubation
centre [Arc Labs].”
Arc Labs is a state-of- the-
art innovation centre in WIT
wherethereisagrowingcom-
munityofearlystagecompa-
nies and a base of more than
200 highly skilled business
andtechnologyprofessionals.
“For example, a number of
modulesfromtheprogramme

sulting work.
“Ourextensiveengagement
with industry in Ireland and
Franceensuresgraduateshave
the required knowledge and
practical skill-set for rapid
employment in internation-
ally-oriented companies,”
said Harrington.
The majority of graduates
thus far have found work in
internationalcompanies,with
roles in banking, advertising
and international marketing.
However, Harrington said:
“Many of our students have

of careers such as human re-
sourcemanagementandpub-
lic relations.”
As well as the academic
content, WIT’s graduate stu-
dents can avail of a number
of career and other support
services during their studies.
These include a tailored in-
duction programme with a
day-long team development
event and dedicated work-

its research.
The fruits of that policy are
seen on an on-going basis.
Earlierthismonththerewere
two major announcements
about concepts that started
life as DIT research projects.
Riffstation was sold to leg-
endary guitar-maker Fend-
er for €5 million, while two
former DIT researchers who
establishedacompanycalled
Exergyn were awarded €2.4
million in EU funding to de-
velop technology to generate
electricity from waste wa-
ter in a commercially viable
manner.
“Riffstation, the creator of
sophisticated guitar tuition
software, is one of a suite of
projects to emerge from an
audio research group based
in Kevin Street School of
Electrical and Electronic
Engineering,” said Profes-
sor Brian O’Neill, director of
research at DIT. “They were
involved in very innovative
research dealing with digital
signal processing applied to
music, and more particular-
ly, in sound separation. From
their research findings they
were able to develop a range

a perfect fit for iconic guitar

develop its digital offerings.

“Exergyn Limited, anoth-
er very recent success story
is quite different, but it too
followed a similar pathway,
having started as a research
project that graduated to a
start-up hosted by our Hot-
houseincubationprogramme.
“Exergyn is based on re-
search that resulted in the
development of novel tech-
niques to create electricity
from waste hot water. This is
very much in keeping with
DIT’s acknowledged spe-
cialism in environmental led
research,” O’Neill said. “It’s
definitely one to watch be-

cost savings for industry.”
Futureprojectsofthisscale
will be accommodated in
DIT’s new research and in-
novation hub at Grangegor-
man, which opens at the end
of this year, funded by PRTLI
and Enterprise Ireland.
In line with the launch of
its new research hub, DIT is
expanding its opportunities
for PhD students. According

DIT will host a research
open evening for anyone
with an interest in pursu-
ing PhD opportunities on
Tuesday, May 26.
“As people finish their
exams, this is a good time
for them to consider their
options in terms of further
research, and this event
will focus on PhD opportu-
nities”, said Melda Slattery,
head of public affairs.
“It will match prospec-
tive research students
with potential supervisors
and will identify suitable
topics for PhD study from
a database of topics identi-
fied by DIT. Attendees will
get the chance to discuss
scholarship opportunities
and other funding mech-
anisms. Our intention is to
get people enthused and
excited about the huge
potential for taking their
study to the next level,”
Slattery said.
“While DIT students and
graduates have been invit-
ed, the event is open to all.”

Double Degree with French flavour

  • 1. TheSunday BusinessPost May24,2015 34Focus On: Postgraduate & 4th Level Education T he innovative double degree Master’s in In- ternationalisation pro- gramme offered by WIT is designed to support new in- ternational business oppor- tunities for students in the south-east. Ireland’s export economy hascreatedasetofworldclass companies and a supporting eco-system of SMEs that has resulted in demand for inter- nationally-orientated busi- ness graduates. In response, WIT has to developed new programmes to give students the opportunity to study and spendtimeinothercountries. All of WIT’s programmes now incorporate an inter- national study experience, while students registered on its MBS Internationalisation programme have the oppor- tunity to study a number of common modules with stu- dents on the Master of Inter- nationalBusinessprogramme atESCBretagneBrestBusiness School in France. Twoofthesharedmodules are delivered directly to the combined student cohort – onemoduleinFranceandone module in Waterford. A third sharedmoduleisdeliveredvia videolinkfromWITtoFrance. Due to the extent of joint study and research involved, studentsonbothprogrammes receivedegreesfrombothcol- leges – a double degree, part of a Joint Awarding Authori- ty Agreement between WIT and QbQI in Ireland and ESC Bretagne Brest in France. ProfessorDenisHarrington, head of Graduate Business at WIT,said:“Thiscoursebrings graduatestothecutting-edge of the discipline by offering an international programme of study incorporating mod- ulesininternationalbusiness negotiations, international strategy and foreign direct investment. “Wemaintainanactivecol- laboration with a number of exportcompanies, toprovide ‘live’casesforstudentengage- ment with the international businessandstrategyprocess and this forms a key part of theprogramme.Studentsalso work on integrated projects with commercial companies and start-up entrepreneurs in our business incubation centre [Arc Labs].” Arc Labs is a state-of- the- art innovation centre in WIT wherethereisagrowingcom- munityofearlystagecompa- nies and a base of more than 200 highly skilled business andtechnologyprofessionals.  “For example, a number of modulesfromtheprogramme have practical, in-company projects, whereacommercial company is a client for con- sulting work. “Ourextensiveengagement with industry in Ireland and Franceensuresgraduateshave the required knowledge and practical skill-set for rapid employment in internation- ally-oriented companies,” said Harrington. The majority of graduates thus far have found work in internationalcompanies, with roles in banking, advertising and international marketing. However, Harrington said: “Many of our students have alsogoneontoexcelinarange of careers such as human re- sourcemanagementandpub- lic relations.” As well as the academic content, WIT’s graduate stu- dents can avail of a number of career and other support services during their studies. These include a tailored in- duction programme with a day-long team development event and dedicated work- shopscoveringtopicsinclud- ing, groupwork, intercultural communication and panel discussionswithlecturerson the programme, providing advice and guidance on pro- fessional development and career opportunities. Further details areavailablefromtheprogramme director,DeclanCahill;emaildca- hill@wit.ie, or see wit.ie DITresearchconceptswininternationalattention D ITissynonymous with innovation and has a strong IP policy to en- courageandsup- portthecommercialisationof its research.  The fruits of that policy are seen on an on-going basis. Earlierthismonththerewere two major announcements about concepts that started life as DIT research projects. Riffstation was sold to leg- endary guitar-maker Fend- er for €5 million, while two former DIT researchers who establishedacompanycalled Exergyn were awarded €2.4 million in EU funding to de- velop technology to generate electricity from waste wa- ter in a commercially viable manner. “Riffstation, the creator of sophisticated guitar tuition software, is one of a suite of projects to emerge from an audio research group based in Kevin Street School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering,” said Profes- sor Brian O’Neill, director of research at DIT. “They were involved in very innovative research dealing with digital signal processing applied to music, and more particular- ly, in sound separation. From their research findings they were able to develop a range ofapplicationsformusic,mu- sicteachingandlearningthat haveapplicationintheenter- tainment industries.” Riffstationidentifiestheba- sic chord structures of songs andallowsguitariststoisolate riffs, solos and chord chang- es when learning songs. It is a perfect fit for iconic guitar brand Fender, as it aims to develop its digital offerings. “Thisisaverygooddemon- strationofthecultureofinno- vationbuiltaroundDIT’sPhD research activities. It shows how the researchers devel- oped their work, got enter- prisesupport, commercialised andincubatedtheirinventions andthensoldontoaninterna- tionalbusiness,”O’Neillsaid. “Exergyn Limited, anoth- er very recent success story is quite different, but it too followed a similar pathway, having started as a research project that graduated to a start-up hosted by our Hot- houseincubationprogramme. “Exergyn is based on re- search that resulted in the development of novel tech- niques to create electricity from waste hot water. This is very much in keeping with DIT’s acknowledged spe- cialism in environmental led research,” O’Neill said. “It’s definitely one to watch be- causeitwilldeliversignificant cost savings for industry.” Futureprojectsofthisscale will be accommodated in DIT’s new research and in- novation hub at Grangegor- man, which opens at the end of this year, funded by PRTLI and Enterprise Ireland.  In line with the launch of its new research hub, DIT is expanding its opportunities for PhD students. According toO’Neill,“Weareinvolvedin theprocessofdevelopingour application for technological university status and plan to develop and expand the re- searchcarriedoutinDITwhile continuing to ensure that it remains relevant to society, has a practical focus and can deliver economic benefit.” DITisalsolaunchinganew scholarship programme. “We are providing funded opportunitiestodevelopare- search career that can lead to innovation, new inventions, the potential to start new companiesandalsogivevital skillstoparticipateinIreland’s knowledgeeconomy,”O’Neill said. “Weareactivelypromoting PhDopportunitiestoreinforce the message that the innova- tiveresearchcarriedoutatDIT canprovidesolutionsforsome ofthemoreevidentchallenges in society. “Because of our interdisci- plinarymake-up,wehavethe potential to combine scien- tific, engineering and design dimensions to create potent solutions.” Those currently weighing up PhD graduate research opportunities, are invited to attend DIT’s Re- searchOpenEveningonTues- day from 4pm to 6pm at The Courtyard,DITAungierStreet, Dublin 2. Attendees will get the chance to discuss scholarship opportunities and other funding mech- anisms. Our intention is to get people enthused and excited about the huge potential for taking their study to the next level,” Slattery said. “While DIT students and graduates have been invit- ed, the event is open to all.” DIT’s research open evening will take place on Tuesday, May 26 from 4pm to 6pm at The Courtyard, DIT Aungier Street, Dublin; visit dit.ie WIT MBS Internationalisation students photographed at a reception at the Mayor's office in Brest France as part of the double degree Masters programme between WIT Business School and ESC Bretagne Brest, France DoubledegreewithFrenchflavour T he Department of Law at Maynooth Univer- sity continues to build on its reputation for offering highlyinnovativeandrelevant postgraduate opportunities with the launch this autumn of two new career-focused programmes.
