At this time last week, before beginning the graduate program, my understanding
of homeland security was largely informed by the media and popular culture. After
reading the assignments and the lecture this week, I can certainly say that my
initial ideas have been challenged and expanded upon. Right away the most
important idea I learned is that homeland security deals with much more than just
terrorism. Prior to this class I never would have considered something like
Hurricane Harvey an issue of homeland security. My initial views on homeland
security were similar to the Department of Homeland Security s in the early 2000s
as noted by Bullock: Prior to 9/11, the majority of FEMA s efforts and funding
were focused on the mitigation of, preparedness for, response to, and recovery
from natural disasters. Much of this changed with the establishment of DHS.
Many, if not all, of the grant programs established within the new DHS focused on
terrorism. FEMA programs and funding were diverted or reduced to support
terrorism. The all hazards concept was not embraced in the early years of DHS.
(Bullock, 2016, p. 5) In addition to this, I generally associated the idea of homeland
security with threats from terror groups and not other nations. I m not sure what I
would have considered a threat from another nation, such as Russia or North Korea,
but in my mind homeland security dealt with groups like ISIS and the Taliban only.
Essentially, I saw the Department of Homeland Security as dealing with outside
threats from terrorist groups. I had always thought that things natural disasters and
recovery efforts were dealt with by the Department of Health and Human Services
or the Department of the Interior, and that threats from foreign nations would be
dealt with by the State Department or the Department of Defense. In particular, I
didn t fully understand the place of FEMA in the Department of Homeland

rhythm of this poem to make it flow easier. I used the guidelines from thirteen

I just had a chance encounter with a garden slug, and it got me thinking about time.
In this ostensibly inanimate, impersonal universe, a garden is a miracle. All the
more so is a garden slug, an animal that can extract sufficient energy from the
garden s vegetable matter to move from place to place under its own power. When
one is in the right mood, watching the shimmering spotted slug slide over the mulch
evokes the miracle of biology in all its splendor; the creature s pulsating aliveness is
hypnotic. But then one recovers his bearings and realizes that this is only, after all, a
garden slug, and that the ladder of biology goes much higher. The miracle of life has
culminated in one s own species, man. Unlike the slug, whose nervous system has
barely enough complexity to let it interface with the environment, a man s nervous
system, nucleated by the adaptive and inventive human brain, can abstractly model its
surroundings and project itself consciously and creatively through time.

symbiosis between corals and dinoflagellate algae of the genus Symbiodinium,

huge increase in energy savings and costs, and that is aluminum. Using aluminum can
pieces with KOH (potassium hydroxide) and other reactants will eventually lead to
the production of alum.
Materials and Methods Starting the experiment, 1.0184 g of aluminum pieces were
weighed out on an analytical balance. The aluminum was then placed in a 250 mL
beaker containing 50.1 mL of 1.4M potassium hydroxide. The solution was then
heated on a hot plate set at 80ВєC for approximately 35 minutes with a spin of 240
RPM. At the end of the 35 minutes, the solution has become black in color and

Perspectives of Success Everybody s views and ideas of success are different.
Some think of money as success. Others think of dreams as success. Few people
may even think love is success. Ideas of success can be influenced by one s values.
Gatsby Daisy have very different views on success. Gatsby is head over heals for
Daisy. Daisy is his epic, romantic love. Meeting daisy for the first time, he had
already knew that she was his future. His heart beat faster and faster as Daisy s
white face came up to his own. He knew that when he kissed this girl, and forever
wed his unutterable visions to her perishable breath, his mind would never romp

If throwing city wide parties, buying a fancy house, and planning a fake tea visit
will get her closer to him, so be it. Having her again means the world to him. Thats
his only goal, his only idea of success. He wouldn t be fully content without her.
Daisy on the other hand, is a little bit different. Her idea of success is stability and
security to where she can be pleasantly happy. She indeed does love and miss
Gatsby, but she also is with Tom and has a security built love for him. Daisy loves
the feeling of security and wealth. That is her idea of success for herself. When she
meets Gatsby again, she feels like he can protect her, he s fun, she loves him and
she misses him, so she thinks she can possibly be with Gatsby but the thought of
telling Tom scares her. When Gatsby and Tom meet, the truth starts to fall out, over
conflict. Daisy sees Gatsby freak out which isn t a good addition with the fact that
he has secrets and he might not have been the guy she thought he was. Daisy will
always love Gatsby, but she needs that security feeling, and now Gatsby isn t so
stable for her with all of his secrets and tantrums. Now is he? Change is also not
stable thing either. She s having a battle in her mind of what to do. Gatsby s more
exciting and amusing, but Tom gives her that stable living that she needs, and what

My Mission Trip From The United States
I have never known a time in my life where I have not gone to church. With that
being said, it s not my largest priority. I tend to get distracted during the school year
with deadlines and hanging out with friends. It s when I m able to go on a mission
trip that I can truly show and see what I believe in. I have been on four missiontrips
altogether and this summer I took a leap of faith and left the country for the first
time to serve. Nicaragua held the same focuses as trips in the United States, but
what I consider a mission trip from my experience in the past was not what this trip
had in store. My first mission trip was five years ago when I was in eighth grade.
Both my sisters and brother had gone on various mission trips and the one to
Detroit was my first opportunity. On that trip we worked on fixing up a couple
churches that held youth group events. My team and I weeded, painted, planted
flowers, organized and cleaned the churches different offices and activity rooms
during the first couple days of the week long trip, the second half of the week, my
team and I consisting of middle schoolers, put on a day camp for the kids around
the area to play games, do crafts, eat lunch, listen to worship music and a message.
It was a great experience because the adults gave the responsibility of leading the
camp to us kids. As far as cultural differences, they were mild as Detroit is only a
few hours away. The housing many families were living in was not to the standard
