I will show you how to get up and running quickly with 2 different Open Source Docker Monitoring solutions. We will quickly cover Docker Stats as the basis and discover how Google cAdvisor gathers metrics for our 2 solutions. We will then build upon this basis to build a Docker Monitoring solution with cAdvisor+InfluxDB+Grafana and then cAdvisor+Prometheus and create dashboards based on the gathered monitoring metrics with Grafna and Prometheus.

Experiences with AWS immutable deploys and job processing
How Docker is used at Gilt: At Gilt we use Docker primarily as a unit of immutability and to allow a standard way of deploying all kinds of software as opposed to its container properties.
Why Gilt built Ionroller: An overview of the problems we tried to solve with Ionroller and immutable deploys. Pitfalls we've encountered with immutable deployments since Ionroller saw adoption in Gilt. Will cover issues such as DNS traffic migration, utilisation of resources ELBs not warmed up properly, Elasticbeanstalk using Nginx as proxy etc. Our experiences with Cloudformation and Codedeploy as an alternative to Ionroller and Elasticbeanstalk.
Jobs: How we used to do batch jobs. Solutions we considered such as Mesos and Chronos. An overview of Sundial, an in house solution we built in the last few months and hope to open source for running containerized Docker jobs on Amazon ECS and why we chose it as our preferred solution.

It’s almost exactly five years since I powered up my first Raspberry Pi - a baffling 12th birthday present! In this talk I’ll share my 5 year coding journey from HTML & PHP via Node.js to (No)SQL and Docker. Along the way I’ll show some atrocious git commits, some awful hacks and some awesome projects. These include a containerised URL shortener, an instant food calorie calculator and an exam revision app that all really should have used Docker. I’ll go into detail on my latest Docker-based RPi cluster (inspired by Captain @AlexEllisUK) with it’s PiGlow load monitor and servo-based physical load detector. I’ll explain how Alex’s support and advocacy got me invited to DockerCon and give a demo of a Raspberry Pi-driven hardware gauge to monitor a Docker Swarm in real time.

In January 2016 Activision approved a pilot project to build a containerised continuous delivery pipeline using Docker. This project spanned multiple devops teams and would culminate in launching a production title "Skylanders Imaginators" in October 2016. The Mission Statement : “Our mission is to deliver an amazing build, test and deploy pipeline that aims to be so reliable, effective and easy to use that our product and title departments will end up writing high value gaming services all day long without giving a second thought to how they may reliably deliver these in record time.” This talk will discuss the cultural and technical challenges faced throughout the pilot. Spoiler alert: Not everyone was happy with the decision to use Docker. The talk will cover the concerns and how we handled them. It will cover why it is important, especially in the games industry, to be evaluating and integrating technologies like Docker in order to remain relevant. Anyone interested in building a deep learning model is only a quick search away from a number of clear and well written tutorials that will take them from zero knowledge to having a working image classifier. But what happens when you need to deploy these models in a production setting? At Salesforce, we use TensorFlow models to help us provide customers with insights into their data, and we do this as close to real-time as possible. Designing these systems in a scalable manner requires overcoming a number of design challenges, but the core component is Docker. Docker enables us to design highly scalable systems by allowing us to focus on service interactions, rather than how our services will interact with the hardware. Docker is also at the core of our test infrastructure, allowing developers and data scientists to build and test the system in an end to end manner on their local machines. While some of this may sound complex, the core message is simplicity - Docker allows us to focus on the aspects of the system that matter, greatly simplifying our lives.

Predicting Space Weather with Docker

SS&C Eze provides various products in the stock market domain. We spent the last couple of years building Eclipse which is an investment suite born in cloud. The journey so far has been very interesting. The very first version of the product were a bunch of monolithic windows services and deployed using Octopus tool. We successfully managed to bring all the monolithic problem to the cloud and created a nightmare for ourselves. We then started applying microservices architecture principles and started breaking the monolithic into small services. Very soon we realized that we need a better packaging/deployment tool. Docker looked like a magical solution to our problem. Since its adoption, It has not only solved the deployment problem for us but has made a deep impact on different aspects of SDLC. It allowed us to use heterogeneous technology stacks, simplified development environment setup, simplified our testing strategy, improved our speed of delivery, and made our developers more productive. In this talk I would like to share our experience of using Docker and its positive impact on our SDLC.
Kubernetes at Datadog Scale
Kubernetes networking can be complex to scale due to issues like growing iptables rules, but newer solutions are helping. Pod networking uses CNI plugins like flannel or Calico to assign each pod an IP and allow communication. Service networking uses kube-proxy and iptables or IPVS for load balancing to pods. DNS is used to resolve service names to IPs. While Kubernetes networking brings flexibility, operators must learn the nuances of their specific CNI plugin and issues can arise, but the ecosystem adapts quickly to new needs and changes don't impact all workloads.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance.
