                          GAMELAN MUSIC
Within the vast archipelago of Indonesia, the most popular form of
traditional music is dominated by different kinds of gongs. This collectively group
of gongs is known as the gamelan. A gamelan orchestra usually consists of at
least 50 different instruments to about a 100+ instruments. Every important
community gathering, like a wedding, rituals, performance of the wayang kulit,
is not complete without the presence of a gamelan. Each island of Indonesia
boast of its own type of gamelan, however, all gamelan(s) follow a standard
type of tuning. Two important type of scale dominates the gamelan matrix
namely, the slendro and the pelog scales. A slendro scale consists of five tones
known as: nem, barang, gulu, dada, and lima. When translated in Western
scale, it is approximately: A, B, C#, E, F#. On the other hand, the pelog scale
consists of seven uneven tones namely, nem, barang, penunggul, gulu, dada,
pelog, and lima. An approximation of its counterpart in Western mode is rather
complicated. Instruments of the gamelan due to its vastness and complexities
have to be divided into groups according to their function in the orchestra.
Gamelan instruments may be classified as melodic instruments, colotomic
instruments or secondary instruments. Melodic Instruments refers to instruments
that provide the main melody of every gamelan music. Colotomic Instruments
are instruments of the gamelan that provides the rhythmic backbone of the
music. Instruments belonging to this section are generally called time keepers.
Secondary Instruments (Ornamenting Instruments) are instruments that are
generally not gongs. Secondary instruments functions as interpunctuating
instruments (that is, instruments that gives the “second voice” to the main
melody, played by the melodic instruments). Sometimes, these instruments also
serve as a bridge from one section to the other.
