Gamelan music is the most popular form of traditional music in Indonesia. A gamelan orchestra typically consists of 50 to over 100 instruments made of gongs. Gamelan performances are an important part of community gatherings like weddings and rituals. There are different regional styles of gamelan across Indonesia, but they all follow a standard tuning system of either the slendro or pelog scale. Instruments in a gamelan orchestra are classified as melodic, colotomic, or secondary based on their musical function - melodic instruments provide the main melody, colotomic instruments provide rhythm, and secondary instruments ornament the melody or act as a bridge between sections.
