Shadow puppet theater, known as wayang kulit, is a traditional Indonesian performing art where leather puppets are used to tell stories through performance. The dalang, or puppeteer, manipulates the puppets from behind a screen while providing voices and narrating the story. The dalang is accompanied by a gamelan ensemble of various bronze percussion instruments and strings. Wayang kulit performances often feature the dalang singing mood songs called suluk between parts of the story. Shadow puppet theater developed in Central Java and spread throughout Indonesia as well as other Southeast Asian countries.
