Indonesia is an archipelago in Southeast Asia comprising over 17,500 islands and over 283 million people, making it the world's most populous country. Music in Indonesia typically uses one of two scales and has a term called irama to refer to tempo. The most popular form of music is the gamelan orchestra, which originated in Java and Bali and features various percussion instruments like metallophones, xylophones, and gongs as well as bamboo flutes and stringed instruments. Vocal music often involves a female soloist singer called a pesindhen performing with the gamelan orchestra or a male chorus called a gerong singing in unison.
