 First phase of this ALE Study focuses on subsea
components, especially the jacket, with damaged leg and
pipelines to the FPSO - Conduct jacket fatigue analysis and
pipeline condition assessments, to provide recommendations
for life extensions.
 Review of topside equipment data and define the gaps based
on redefined operational requirements.
 Prepare Scope of Work document for Phase 2.
 Phase 1 delivers requirements for subsea
inspection, to allow operator ample time to
plan for underwater inspections. Results will
be reviewed and justified in Phase 2. Phase 2
will also include detailed assessments for
topside equipment.
 Phase 2 Scope of Work documents helps
customer understand expectation of work
required in next phase of the life extension
studies, to further plan and obtain budget.
The offshore wellhead platform and flowlines in the field are
approaching design life but can still produce for another 10 years.
The original design life is considered short (10 years), whilst other
assets in the field were designed for 15 years.
Customer intends to extend the operations for additional 10 years
from end of life. Platform suffers minor damage on primary jacket
leg which requires further analysis, technical review and justification.

This platform located offshore of east Malaysia started operation in
1997 and was designed for 20 years operation (until 2017).
The customer has obtained PSC for the field until 2032, with plans to
install a new wellhead platform which will be bridge linked to this
platform. Thus is looking to operate this facility beyond intended
service life.
Platform issues are ageing or obsolete systems & equipment.

 Proposed alternative structural life extension methodology
(API RP2SIM) by performing ultimate strength pushover
analysis - Able to prove that platforms have adequate
reliability/reserve strength despite high marine growth
thickness and inadequate fatigue life.
 Performed marine growth sensitivity to justify non-cleaning
of marine growth
 Re-baseline fatigue lives based on targeted one-off node
inspection, instead of calculated fatigue lives.
 Conducted qualitative RBI assessment to determine
platform’s inspection interval of inspection during extended
operational life.
 Minimize cost of underwater inspections and
mitigation measures required for life
extension. Large cost savings (~USD 8.5m)
based on cost comparison study
 Reduced cost of future regular inspection by
optimizing inspection interval with RBI vs
time-based inspection planning.
Fourteen (14) offshore platforms were installed between 1993 to
1998, with original design life of 20 years.
The customer intends to extend the platform service life until 2032.
A previous life extension study was performed using conventional
linear analyses, which yielded many negative results due to high
marine growth thickness and short fatigue life. Based on results, a
considerable mitigation/inspection scheme was proposed, e.g.
marine growth cleaning, underwater node weld toe grinding &
hammer peening.

 To address this challenge DNV GL carried out Condition And
Remnant Life (CARL) studies for four compressor stations and one
gas terminal.
 This involved collecting all available data relating to the asset’s
integrity (inspection reports, maintenance records, performance
data, etc.) as well as carrying out a visual survey and interviewing
site maintenance and operational personnel.
 Using all the data gathered DNV GL systematically assessed the
condition of all individual systems on each asset, and their major
components, in order to identify any potential threats to the safe
and reliable ongoing operation of the asset.
 A root cause analysis was carried out on potential threats in order
to determine the most effective remedial action.
 For each asset which has been assessed the
CARL studies have delivered a comprehensive
and prioritised list of all the issues which need to
be considered when planning future
maintenance, or making strategic decisions
regarding repair, replacement and upgrade.
 The CARL studies enabled the client to quantify
the costs required to extend the remnant life of
the assets.
 In addition the studies uncovered several major
integrity issues which the client had not
previously identified as significant.
This client has a large number of gas transmission assets across the UK
which are approaching or have exceeded their original design life. They
therefore have a need to understand the condition of these ageing assets
in order to prioritise maintenance work and develop future integrity
strategies.
Although they are continually generating large quantities of data regarding
the health of their assets, including regular inspections, maintenance
reports and performance data, this data is often not fully utilised to
determine the asset condition and identify possible threats to future safe
and reliable operation.

After more than 20 years in operation Oseberg Feltsenter is meeting
ageing issues on the systems and equipment and some of the original

DNV GL Asset Life Extension (ALE) Projects Showcase

DNV GL © 2013  First phase of this ALE Study focuses on subsea components, especially the jacket, with damaged leg and pipelines to the FPSO - Conduct jacket fatigue analysis and pipeline condition assessments, to provide recommendations for life extensions.  Review of topside equipment data and define the gaps based on redefined operational requirements.  Prepare Scope of Work document for Phase 2.  Phase 1 delivers requirements for subsea inspection, to allow operator ample time to plan for underwater inspections. Results will be reviewed and justified in Phase 2. Phase 2 will also include detailed assessments for topside equipment.  Phase 2 Scope of Work documents helps customer understand expectation of work required in next phase of the life extension studies, to further plan and obtain budget. The offshore wellhead platform and flowlines in the field are approaching design life but can still produce for another 10 years. The original design life is considered short (10 years), whilst other assets in the field were designed for 15 years. Customer intends to extend the operations for additional 10 years from end of life. Platform suffers minor damage on primary jacket leg which requires further analysis, technical review and justification.   • 2. DNV GL © 2013  Structural scope:  in-place & fatigue analysis, ultimate strength assessments & member criticality identification.  Development of structural RBI program for life extension. Continual review of inspection findings & risk ranking update.  Equipment study:  E&I systems, static & rotating equipment, pipelines.  Perform risk assessment and recommend measures to extend the life for the platforms with focus on critical equipment  Costing analysis (Monte Carlo)  List of issues to address/prioritize during life extension.  Optimize requirements for NDT inspection for joints to re-baseline platform life & justify structural life extension.  Recommended measures to extend the life of the critical equipment.  Recommendations for future inspection & maintenance plans. This platform located offshore of east Malaysia started operation in 1997 and was designed for 20 years operation (until 2017). The customer has obtained PSC for the field until 2032, with plans to install a new wellhead platform which will be bridge linked to this platform. Thus is looking to operate this facility beyond intended service life. Platform issues are ageing or obsolete systems & equipment. DNV GL © 2013  Proposed alternative structural life extension methodology (API RP2SIM) by performing ultimate strength pushover analysis - Able to prove that platforms have adequate reliability/reserve strength despite high marine growth thickness and inadequate fatigue life.  Performed marine growth sensitivity to justify non-cleaning of marine growth  Re-baseline fatigue lives based on targeted one-off node inspection, instead of calculated fatigue lives.  Conducted qualitative RBI assessment to determine platform’s inspection interval of inspection during extended operational life.  Minimize cost of underwater inspections and mitigation measures required for life extension. Large cost savings (~USD 8.5m) based on cost comparison study  Reduced cost of future regular inspection by optimizing inspection interval with RBI vs time-based inspection planning. Fourteen (14) offshore platforms were installed between 1993 to 1998, with original design life of 20 years. The customer intends to extend the platform service life until 2032. A previous life extension study was performed using conventional linear analyses, which yielded many negative results due to high marine growth thickness and short fatigue life. Based on results, a considerable mitigation/inspection scheme was proposed, e.g. marine growth cleaning, underwater node weld toe grinding & hammer peening. DNV GL © 2013  To address this challenge DNV GL carried out Condition And Remnant Life (CARL) studies for four compressor stations and one gas terminal.  This involved collecting all available data relating to the asset’s integrity (inspection reports, maintenance records, performance data, etc.) as well as carrying out a visual survey and interviewing site maintenance and operational personnel.  Using all the data gathered DNV GL systematically assessed the condition of all individual systems on each asset, and their major components, in order to identify any potential threats to the safe and reliable ongoing operation of the asset.  A root cause analysis was carried out on potential threats in order to determine the most effective remedial action.  For each asset which has been assessed the CARL studies have delivered a comprehensive and prioritised list of all the issues which need to be considered when planning future maintenance, or making strategic decisions regarding repair, replacement and upgrade.  The CARL studies enabled the client to quantify the costs required to extend the remnant life of the assets.  In addition the studies uncovered several major integrity issues which the client had not previously identified as significant. This client has a large number of gas transmission assets across the UK which are approaching or have exceeded their original design life. They therefore have a need to understand the condition of these ageing assets in order to prioritise maintenance work and develop future integrity strategies. Although they are continually generating large quantities of data regarding the health of their assets, including regular inspections, maintenance reports and performance data, this data is often not fully utilised to determine the asset condition and identify possible threats to future safe and reliable operation. After more than 20 years in operation Oseberg Feltsenter is meeting ageing issues on the systems and equipment and some of the original equipment is becoming obsolete. Oseberg Feltsenter has oil and gas resources that indicate production will continue beyond 2030, which is beyond the design life for the facilities.
