Project Title: DNA Digital Data Storage.
Abstract:
The demand for data storage is growing exponentially, but the capacity of existing storage
media is not keeping up to the mark which is needed. The amount of data which being generated by
the devices which are connected to the internet every second is many terabytes. To store such a huge
amount of data and retrieve it takes a lot of time and resources. Using DNA to archive data is an
attractive possibility because DNA is extremely dense and can hold exabytes of data per one gram of
DNA. The life time of data which is stored in the DNA will be more than 1000 years. It is the process
of encoding and decoding binary data to and from synthesized DNA strands. DNA molecules are
genetic blueprints for living cells and organisms. DNA has been one of the mediums for secret writing
which is a way for DNA cryptography and stenography.
Introduction:
In the modern society everything is connected to the internet. The explosive growth of
computer systems and their interconnections via internet has led to a need for huge number of
databases and data warehouses to store the data which is being produced by them each and every
second in time. The growing use of the internet has led to a continuous increase in the amount of data
that is being exchanged and stored in various digital media. The conventional mode of storing data is
in the form of magnetic tapes, CD’s, DVDs, hard disks, solid state drives. All these modes of storage
medium will only store data which can be of a few terabytes. Now, the need for retrieval and access
of data will arise when we are performing big data analytics on it and the amount of time and
resources which will be required will be enormous. The space which is needed to store all the data
will keep on increasing as the data which is being produced will only continue to rise as time
progresses and as the no of devices continue to increase. It will be very difficult to even duplicate the
data and keep it as a backup for any emergency usage, this is because we produce about 2,500,000
GB of data every day. There comes a need o find a better way or a solution to store such huge amounts
of data in less space and less time which can be retrieved easily. DNA is a potential solution to this
problem. DNA contains data about everything about an organism. DNA is responsible for all the
features which are present in the organism. DNA contains strands which are connected. DNA is made
up of four bases namely adenine, thymine, guanine and cytosine. The order of bases is what that
determines the features of an organism. This discovery was one of the most important one as it has
laid a path for future data storage.
With the advancements in technology, DNA sequencing was invented through which the
order of the four bases in the DNA structure can be determined. Computers store data in the form of
ones and zeros, we can implement the same method here and use the bases of A, C, G and T to store
data in the DNA. Through Artificial DNA Synthesis we can store our data in DNA.
