The central nervous system (CNS) is comprised of the brain and spinal cord. The spinal cord transmits sensory and motor signals to and from the brain and controls reflexes. The brain controls consciousness, higher mental processes, and regulates bodily functions. It is protected by three membranes (meninges) and the skull. The dura mater is the tough outer membrane, the arachnoid mater is the middle delicate layer, and the pia mater is the innermost delicate membrane that produces cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to cushion and protect the CNS.
