Geopolitics of the Eastern Mediterranean

This article discusses the new socio hydrological cycle in geography perspective and issues arising from human intervention in the hydrological cycle. Hydrology is considered as a field of water sciences, whether natural or disturbed by the use of various environmental science techniques. However, its emphasis on the impact of human adaptation and its co evolution to the hydrological cycle are sometimes left unexplored. This article traces the development of multi dimensional and interdisciplinary hydrological geography that ultimately involves the human component as an endogenous factor that alters its natural cycle. Subsequently, its discuss and analysis of importance of the new socio hydrological perspective to geography, especially in Malaysian context. Lessons for Aquatic Protected Areas from Marine and Freshwater Experiences

Marine protected areas (MPAs) and freshwater protected areas (FPAs) share many commonalities in their design, establishment and management, suggesting great potential for sharing lessons learned. However, surprisingly little has been exchanged to date, and both realms of inquiry and practice have progressed mostly independent of each other. Both MPAs and FPAs, collectively Aquatic Protected Areas (APAs), are frequently used as community fisheries management tools to support the sustainability of small-scale fisheries. In a transdisciplinary effort to explore crossover lessons between marine and freshwater realms, a team of researchers synthesized case studies of four MPAs and five FPAs (or clusters of FPAs) from nine countries, including Bangladesh, Cambodia, Chile, Madagascar, Mexico, Myanmar, Lao PDR, Thailand, and the United States. This presentation explores similarities, differences, and transferable lessons between MPAs and FPAs under five themes: 1) ecological system; 2) establishment approaches; 3) effectiveness monitoring; 4) sustaining APAs; and 5) challenges and external threats. In particular, the findings indicate many similarities around the human dimension of both MPA and FPA establishment and management, which highlight clear opportunities for exchanging lessons related to stakeholder engagement and community support. Additionally, similar socioeconomic and governance assessment methods could be used to address gaps in effectiveness data in both realms. Continued exchange between MPAs and FPAs, as well as increased transdisciplinary collaboration would benefit both realms, and practitioners could work together to address shared challenges, such as developing mechanisms for diversified and sustained funding, and employing integrated coastal/watershed management to address system-level threats.

The aims of this study include gathering and documenting the indigenous traditional norms and knowledge of Al-Ghyoul water resources shares and distributions in selected Yemeni Region. It also studies, analyzes, identifies common and variable practices and problems under the conditions of different communities/regions. It also attempts to formulate appropriate actions to remedy threatening obstacles. The field data collection for the study covered selected governorates where such traditional irrigation systems prevail like Taiz, Bib, Hadhramaut, Shabwah. It used a descriptive approach through literature review, like documents and reports, field observations, survey questionnaire, individual interviews with key informant (KII), and discussion meetings with specialists, local officials, local leaders, and farmers. The study identifies some prevailing norms and mores that characterize traditional Al-Ghyoul irrigations systems including the rules of water shares distribution, rehabilitation and maintenance as well as conflict resolution. However, it observed some slight variation from one location to another. Some of the inherited local customs have been changing due to the introduction of modern technologies and socio-political changes, draught and climatic change. This in turn has negatively affected the common indigenous irrigation practices. The study concluded with some recommendations for future consideration.

Governing Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), with UCL's Peter Jones

In the latest of a series of IIED critical themes, Peter Jones, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Geography at UCL, discussed Governing Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) on October 6, 2014. His presentation explored the argument that the key to the resilience is diversity, both of species in ecosystems and incentives in governance systems. The discussion drew on the findings of 20 MPA case studies from around the world, employing a novel governance analysis framework to address some key questions: How can top-down and bottom-up approaches to MPA governance be combined? What does this mean, in reality, in different contexts? How can we develop and implement governance approaches that are both effective in achieving conservation objectives and equitable in fairly sharing associated costs and benefits? Jones has spent more than 20 years undertaking trans-disciplinary research on the governance of human uses of marine resources, provided advice to many national and international organisations on MPA and MSP issues, is a Ministerial Appointee to the Sussex Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority and recently published the book Governing Marine Protected Areas: resilience through diversity (2014, Routledge). Most natural resources or environmental goods and services are exposed to degradation, society over utilize them for only their current benefits without thinking the future life span of these resources. The study analyzed determinants of households’ willingness to pay for conservation of natural Kool water (Burie Kool Wuha, W/Gojjam, Ethiopia). The contingent valuation method and Heckman two step model was employed. The results indicates that sex of the household head, education of the household, value attached to the resource by households as source of income, value attached to the resource by households reserving for future generation and wealth of the households has a significant and positive correlation with households WTP, and family size of households, education of the household and wealth of the households has a significant and positive correlation with the households payment levels. On the other hand, initial bid value has a negative correlation with the level of payments. Therefore, by taking the importance of the resource for the society and the households WTP, the policy makers need to focus on identified factors in designing strategies for the conservation of the resource.

Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation. This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability. Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee. • The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error. Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials. This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
