3. External Disaster
o External Disaster - Incident in surrounding community (
e.g. tornado, earthquake, fire, explosion, accidents
involving automobile, train, bus, or airplane, etc.)
Situations which involve relatively large numbers of less
severely ill or injured victims (e.g., food poisoning,
localized chemical burns, etc.) or a staggered arrival of
large numbers of victims.
4. Internal Disaster
o Internal Disaster - Incident within the hospital proper (i.e.,
fire, tornado, explosion, flood, earthquake, bomb threat)
that necessitates the transfer of patients to safe areas of
the hospital or complete evacuation of the hospital.

o DISASTER CONFIRMED
o Follow Disaster Plan
o If Yellow Alert has been by-
passed, fill out and turn in
“Status of Unit Disaster
Forms” at this time.
6. Red Alert
o Initiate Disaster Recall Plan upon Red Alert
o Activate the extent of lockdown notifying Engineering and the
Personnel Pool
o Assemble Emergency Control Center
o Set-Up Communication Channels
o External - Office of Emergency Management, police, fire
department
o Internal - triage, personnel pool, nursing stations, maintenance
7. Red Alert
o The communications, internal and external, are vital
during emergency/disaster conditions. Communication
needs include:
• Associate Disaster Recall
• Communications with other hospitals, emergency services,
and ambulances
• Internal Communications
• Incoming Contacts and Inquiries
8. Red Alert
o ALL DEPARTMENTS MUST COMPLETE AND TURN IN
A “STATUS OF UNIT DISASTER FORM”
o Refer to Disaster Plan for department specific
responsibilities
9. Red Alert
o The front entrance of the North Campus is the only
hospital entry used by persons other than disaster victims
in time of disaster.
o All other entrances are secured by security officers
assigned from the personnel pool.
o The personnel pool is located in the hospital cafeteria
and allocates manpower needed in time of disaster.
10. On-Duty Personnel
o Remain at duty station unless directed to report to
personnel pool.
o Associates leaving the hospital for any reason must
check out with the Personnel Pool Coordinator.
11. Off-Duty Personnel
o Do not clock in.
o Report immediately to personnel pool in cafeteria to sign
in and for assignment
o Associates leaving the hospital for any reason must sign
out with the Personnel Pool Coordinator
o The Personnel Pool Coordinator will make priority
assignments after contacting the Emergency Control
Center (ECC) as to the extent of lockdown
12. Red Alert
o Each patient that is seen in the ED
during a disaster is given a
disaster tag.
o The triage nurse categorizes the
patient according to triage
protocol.
13. Red Alert
o The color indicated at the bottom of the tag indicates the
appropriate triage category.
o Disaster tags are color coded as follows:
• Black – Deceased
• Red – Immediate
• Yellow – Delayed
• Green – Hold
14. Red Alert
o When the patient arrives to the ED,
a representative from Medical
Records stays with that patient and
collects data for the disaster tag.
o The disaster tag is part of the
permanent medical record.
o The dispatch section is used for
patient tracking.
15. Dispatch Section
o Indicate the initial ED location and the time to that
location as follows: ED5/1610.
o Patients triaged to other areas of the hospital are
indicated as follows: OPCC/1610.
