Integrative Learning
VISION:
• For all students to have an enriched
educational experience through purposeful
experiences within and beyond the classroom
and deep understanding of the impact of their
experiences on learning and preparation for
the future.
USC Connect
Integrative Learning
MISSION:
• To increase integrative learning (including
experiential learning) across within and
beyond the classroom experiences for all
undergraduate students through collaborative
work across academic and student affairs.
USC Connect
INCLUDING:
– Development of resources/messaging to support
students in identifying purposeful engagements
– Increasing efforts to connect academic and
beyond the classroom learning with guided
reflection throughout students’ collegiate careers
– Recognizing students’ integrative learning (e.g.,
Graduation with Leadership Distinction)
– Providing faculty and staff professional
development and support.
• USC Connect (since 2011) – solid foundation in
integrative learning at USC
• 1,031 GLD completers since May 2014
• USC 2023 Strategic Plan:
“Expand high impact experiential learning within
and beyond the classroom”
Current Context
Experiential
Learning
Experience in an “applied
setting” in which the
learner analyzes
experience in a greater
context (e.g., other
experience, known
concepts)
An internship
A project-based
experience
A study abroad or
peer leadership
experience
Integrative
Learning
Integrating learning across
multiple experiences and
over time

CURRENT SUMMARY OF STUDENT ENGAGEMENT IN EL
Background
• Purpose: Generate an inventory of experiential learning
opportunities utilizing 2015-2016 as the snapshot year
– Identify experiences that fulfill criteria
– Number of students engaging in experiential learning
• Opportunities that exist across the USC-Columbia
campus
– Credit-bearing experiences (academic departments/courses)
– Non-credit-bearing experiences (beyond the classroom
providers)
Findings
– In sum, over 150 undergraduate courses and
more than 60 non-credit bearing opportunity
types involve experiential learning
– Approximately 75% of students engage in at least
one experiential learning opportunity
Findings
– Required coursework within academic major (OIRAA)
• Examples: (College) HRSM, Education; (Majors) Anthropology, Media Arts
– Non-required courses or non-credit bearing opportunities
(BTCM)
• Leadership Roles: Supplemental Instruction Leader, Resident Mentors, MAPP
Leaders
• Undergraduate Research: Magellan Grants
• Study Abroad: Global Programs
• Service: Alternative Breaks, Service-Learning Courses
• Work-Related Experiences: Internships, Student Employment
– Non-required courses or non-credit bearing opportunities
(Conversations with BTC Providers)
•Many additional opportunities could meet experiential learning criteria with
some added structure/emphasis on learning (support for reflection, tracking)
Experiential Learning
A sustained, experience (45 hours or more) that
engages students in applying academics (e.g.,
theories, concepts, frameworks) in a “real world”
setting (e.g., engagement with communities,
professionals, or clients)
which is purposefully chosen,
supervised, and
requires reflection on learning.
Integrative Learning
USC Connect Pathways Partners
Deans’, Associate/Assistant Deans’ Councils
Faculty (fellows, council, senate, departments)
Students (councils, SGA)
Student Affairs (directors, AVP, departments)
Building a Consensus on
Experiential Learning
Table Activity
• Overall reactions to the stated experiential learning
criteria and overall goal for student participation
– Questions or feedback on specific categories and criteria for
eligibility
• Individuals/groups we should be contacting specifically
within your area/unit to have additional discussions
• Additional general feedback or questions/concerns we
should consider moving forward

  • 21. CURRENT SUMMARY OF STUDENT ENGAGEMENT IN EL Background • Purpose: Generate an inventory of experiential learning opportunities utilizing 2015-2016 as the snapshot year – Identify experiences that fulfill criteria – Number of students engaging in experiential learning • Opportunities that exist across the USC-Columbia campus – Credit-bearing experiences (academic departments/courses) – Non-credit-bearing experiences (beyond the classroom providers)
  • 22. Findings – In sum, over 150 undergraduate courses and more than 60 non-credit bearing opportunity types involve experiential learning – Approximately 75% of students engage in at least one experiential learning opportunity
  • 23. Findings – Required coursework within academic major (OIRAA) • Examples: (College) HRSM, Education; (Majors) Anthropology, Media Arts – Non-required courses or non-credit bearing opportunities (BTCM) • Leadership Roles: Supplemental Instruction Leader, Resident Mentors, MAPP Leaders • Undergraduate Research: Magellan Grants • Study Abroad: Global Programs • Service: Alternative Breaks, Service-Learning Courses • Work-Related Experiences: Internships, Student Employment – Non-required courses or non-credit bearing opportunities (Conversations with BTC Providers) •Many additional opportunities could meet experiential learning criteria with some added structure/emphasis on learning (support for reflection, tracking)
  • 24. Experiential Learning A sustained, experience (45 hours or more) that engages students in applying academics (e.g., theories, concepts, frameworks) in a “real world” setting (e.g., engagement with communities, professionals, or clients) which is purposefully chosen, supervised, and requires reflection on learning.

  5. USC Connect was tasked with completing an inventory of potential experiential learning opportunities occurring on the campus. This study was exploratory in nature using the identified EL criteria as the guide for the analysis. In reality, there were two questions we were trying to answer: what experiences “count” based upon the stated criteria and what number of undergraduate students engage in these types of experiences. In addition, we observed campus processes for how engagements could be identified and how data is currently collected to better understand best practices, challenges that could exist, etc. The 2015-2016 academic year was selected based upon the most recent graduation data available from OIRAA with regards to graduates and academic major/degree. As noted, we were looking to both credit-bearing and non-credit bearing experiences that exist on the Columbia campus, and thus looked to academic departments and beyond the classroom providers for evidence to help answer our two guiding questions.
  6. I will share what we found first and then go into detail regarding our process. Based upon the snapshot year, over 150 courses and more than 60 non-credit bearing opportunity types involve experiential learning. A word on “opportunity types”—study abroad offers several categories of experiences with multiple options, such as the “Study Abroad Global USC” program where students can register for program experiences in Costa Rica or Italy or Taiwan. Based upon the courses and non-credit bearing opportunities, approximately 75% of students engage in at least one EL experience across their academic career, and it is likely that some will engage in many before they graduate.
  7. How did we complete our analysis? We utilized the graduation data provided through OIRAA in conjunction with information about courses required in each major that would likely fit the criteria. Irma also followed up with academic departments when questions developed or clarity or recommendations were needed. We also coordinated with Pam Bowers and BTCM to see what evidence existed through an analysis of the engagement descriptions based upon the EL criteria and corresponding student participation counts, again using 2015-2016 academic year as the snapshot year. Lastly, I communicated with many beyond the classroom providers, including many in student affairs to understand additional roles or experiences that could count based upon the EL criteria. Those meetings were also very helpful towards vetting the EL criteria for feedback, and to gather insights about unit-specific processes and considerations for how to move forward in this process.
  8. Irma works in phrase “sound bite” Select audience that is most relevant to your roles/work
  9. Now that you have heard about our updates with Experiential Learning, we really want to now hear from you. At your tables, we are looking for two things: Discussion on your thoughts to the experiential learning criteria visible for you through the provided experiential learning criteria sheet (separate hand-out). Feedback Considerations for next-steps (show slide prompts) 2) Your individual feedback on the EL criteria utilizing the half-sheet at your table. You do not need to put your name on the sheet, unless you would like to share this information. Please leave these sheets at your table when you leave and I will pick them up after the fact. So, first table discussion with your colleagues based upon the provided prompts… Closing—please remember to jot down your thoughts on the sheet as well and please follow up with Irma or myself if additional thoughts happen after today’s presentation.
