There are numerous theories of personality that form the foundation for the theoretical orientations used by mental health professionals. Two of these theoretical orientations are psychoanalytic and trait.
The psychoanalytic theoretical orientation includes the ideas set forth by the controversial pioneer in personality theories, Sigmund Freud. His psychoanalytic personality theory describes the mind as operating on three layers: conscious, preconscious (or subconscious), and unconscious. In his theory, personality evolves from what is buried in the unconscious that drives behavior and emotion. The conflict between the conscious and unconscious creates an array of defense mechanisms that further determine thought and action. By uncovering inaccessible memories and examining them through therapy, individuals can address sources of struggle in their lives and work to alter destructive aspects of personality. Freud’s view of personality, as seen through the general use of his ideas and terms such as id, ego, and superego, has had profound influence, as has the notion of psychoanalysis, or “talk therapy,” making an understanding of Freud’s concepts vital for exploring personality theories.
The trait theoretical orientation includes the ideas of Allport, Eysenck, Cattell, and Costa and McCrae. As the name implies, trait personality theories examine how traits combine to define personality. Unlike other personality theories studied thus far, trait theory views personality as uniquely individual, shaped by the mix of traits that characterize each person. Key trait theorists diverge on the number of traits that matter and how to rank them. Allport, for example, recognized thousands of traits but emphasized three main types: cardinal (dominant, e.g., narcissism), central (major, e.g., intelligence), and secondary (transient, e.g., situational anxiety) traits. Other theorists have both expanded and contracted the number and measurement of significant traits, identifying specific factors and dimensions. As you will explore, trait theory requires consideration of the extent to which traits are predictors of behavior—such as, cardinal traits like narcissism—and in what ways they are not.

Having now reviewed the four major theoretical and historical models in psychology in Chapter 5, this chapter illustrates how integration is achieved in the actual science and practice of clinical psychology. In addition to psychological perspectives per se, a full integration of human functioning demands a synthesis of psychological factors with both biological and social elements. This combination of biological, psychological, and social factors comprises an example of contemporary integration in the form of the biopsychosocial perspective. This chapter describes the evolution of individual psychological perspectives into a more comprehensive biopsychosocial synthesis, perhaps first touched upon 2,500 years ago by the Greeks.
The Call to Integration
While there are over 400 different types of approaches to psychotherapy and other professional services offered by clinical psychologists (Karasu, 1986), the major schools of thought reviewed and illustrated in Chapter 5 have emerged during the past century as the primary perspectives in clinical psychology. As mentioned, these include the psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, humanistic, and family systems approaches. Prior to the 1980s, most psychologists tended to adhere to one of these theoretical approaches in their research, psychotherapy, assessment, and consultation. Numerous institutes, centers, and professional journals were (and still are) devoted to the advancement, research, and practice of individual perspectives (e.g., Behavior Therapy and International Journal of Psychoanalysis). Professionals typically affiliate themselves with one perspective and the professional journals and organizations represented by that perspective (e.g., Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies), and have little interaction or experience with the other perspectives or organizations. Opinions are often dogmatic and other perspectives and organizations viewed with skepticism or even disdain. Surprisingly, psychologists with research and science training sometimes choose not to use their objective and critical thinking skills when discussing the merits and limitations of theoretical frameworks different from their own. Choice of theoretical orientation is typically a by-product of graduate and postgraduate training, the personality of the professional, and the general worldview held of human nature. Thus far in your experience as a psychology student, you have been introduced to the field of psychology in terms of the mind and its functions in relationship to human behavior. Most introductory psychology textbooks and resources for other psychology classes emphasize a cause-and-effect scientific model, which typifies traditional psychology in the United States and the Western hemisphere in general. Throughout this course and in your course text, you read about Western psychology, which is representative of the practice of psychology in the United States.
Alternative psychologies evolved independently of Western psychology because they are suitable for the needs of non-Western cultures. One notable difference is that alternative psychologies prioritize collective or group processes over isolated individual processes. Alternative psychologies view individuals as reflections of the larger culture or society. While the various alternative psychologies do have differences, they also have common themes such as those outlined in your course text: meaning-making, collective construction of psychological reality, time-dependent processes, and normative explanations.
Liberation psychology, which is one type of alternative psychology, has been used to address the needs of the poor and the oppressed in Latin America. With liberation psychology, the focus is on social change. Social change is possible when attempts are made to improve the conditions of the entire community rather than to only address the needs of one specific individual within the group. Additionally, this type of alternative psychology makes a difference by addressing challenges of the native people where they live, in their professions, and in the world around them. Liberation psychology also helps people understand what they need in order to facilitate change.

There is considerable tension within psychoanalysis regarding the place of
social context in the individual’s inner life. In recent years, applications of
psychoanalytic theory have extended to contexts outside of the therapeutic
setting, and psychoanalytic scholars have increasingly attended to issues of race
and culture within the therapeutic setting. The present article focuses on appli-
cations of psychoanalytic theory in clinical and community contexts, with an
emphasis on racial and cultural diversity. The author proposes an approach to
clinical and community interventions that integrates multiple theoretical per-
spectives (e.g., psychoanalytic, community, multicultural) to advance practitio-
ners’ and consultants’ engagement with issues of diversity, and considers how
practice with racially and culturally diverse populations can inform existing
psychoanalytic theory. Two case examples, one from psychotherapy and the
other from a community intervention, are presented to illustrate the ways in
which psychoanalytic theory can benefit therapeutic work and consultation
across sociocultural contexts. Implications of the experiences of minority indi-
viduals and communities for psychoanalytic theory, research, practice, and
education are discussed.

The study of culture and mental health is an interdisciplinary endeavor with a long history, but psychology has only been fitfully involved with the ongoing conversation. Cultural psychiatry, by contrast, represents a decades‐long interdisciplinary endeavor primarily involving psychiatrists and anthropologists. One problem is that the anthropological view of culture, not as independent variable but as deep context, has been unfamiliar to psychologists until relatively recently. Although anthropological views have influenced researchers in cultural psychology, at times profoundly, collaborations between cultural and clinical psychologists remain uncommon.
Our paper in Social and Personality Psychology Compass describes one way of thinking about how cultural psychology and clinical psychology might be integrated, to the mutual benefit of both disciplines. We advocate a psychological approach to culture and mental health that goes beyond simply stating that ‘culture matters’, hoping to go beyond descriptions of group differences to an exploration of the processes by which cultural context shapes health and well‐being. Ideally, the emerging discipline combines the strengths of cultural psychology and clinical psychology, drawing on the theories, methodologies, and empirical literatures of both.
Indeed, in many ways, cultural–clinical psychology is not new. Psychologists have conducted research on culture and mental health for decades, and we draw on this work extensively in describing our approach. Nonetheless, the specific integration of cultural and clinical psychology is just beginning to emerge as an organized field of study. This teaching and learning guide includes some current work in this field, but emphasizes the various contributions that have shaped our view of what cultural–clinical psychology might become.

In this response, there will be four main points. They are, first, the change that humanistic psychology brought; second, how that change affected psychologists' understanding of human nature; third, ways the humanistic psychologists asked their questions and conducted their research; and fourth, how those methods differed from behaviorists' ways of doing so.
Abraham Maslow, considered the founder of third force or humanistic psychology, wrote in 1969 that he found it necessary to avoid being “anti-Freudian” or “anti-behaviorist,” and to adopt—even if it meant taking serious intellectual risks—an untested attitude; namely, to view human beings from the perspective of psychological health and potential rather than otherwise. He wrote that it was time for psychology to concern itself with understanding what human beings could do if properly nourished and nurtured (what was their potential?), rather than trying to elucidate merely their behavioral functioning or their mental illnesses. He advocated a key change in psychologists’ view of science, as he had written in his earlier Psychology of Science (1966): to consider human beings as free and autonomous persons and to shift psychology as a science away from the idea that our goal is prediction and control of human beings. In his words, “Do we ourselves want to be predicted and predictable? Controlled and controllable?” (1966, p.729). These ideas—looking at human healthiness and potential, treating humans as free and autonomous persons, and viewing our science as a science of spontaneity and of the real concerns of real people living in their real worlds—formed the central core of the new third force in psychology, which deliberately separated itself from the older dominating schools of thought, behaviorism and psychoanalysis.

The psychoanalytic theoretical orientation includes the ideas set forth by the controversial pioneer in personality theories, Sigmund Freud. As the name implies, trait personality theories examine how traits combine to define personality. Unlike other personality theories studied thus far, trait theory views personality as uniquely individual, shaped by the mix of traits that characterize each person. Key trait theorists diverge on the number of traits that matter and how to rank them. Allport, for example, recognized thousands of traits but emphasized three main types: cardinal (dominant, e.g., narcissism), central (major, e.g., intelligence), and secondary (transient, e.g., situational anxiety) traits. Other theorists have both expanded and contracted the number and measurement of significant traits, identifying specific factors and dimensions. As you will explore, trait theory requires consideration of the extent to which traits are predictors of behavior—such as, cardinal traits like narcissism—and in what ways they are not.
This week, you will examine two theoretical orientations - psychoanalytic and trait, including their respective theorists, cultural considerations, assessments/interventions, limitations, and unique aspects. You will also apply one theory from each orientation to a case study analysis.

Opinions are often dogmatic and other perspectives and organizations viewed with skepticism or even disdain. A complete review of the various paradigms and
their implications is far beyond the scope of this article.
Instead I will provide a brief historical overview leading
to the major approaches currently in use and then de-

in a common conceptual space.

Thus far in your experience as a psychology student, you have been introduced to the field of psychology in terms of the mind and its functions in relationship to human behavior. Most introductory psychology textbooks and resources for other psychology classes emphasize a cause-and-effect scientific model, which typifies traditional psychology in the United States and the Western hemisphere in general. Throughout this course and in your course text, you read about Western psychology, which is representative of the practice of psychology in the United States.
Alternative psychologies evolved independently of Western psychology because they are suitable for the needs of non-Western cultures. One notable difference is that alternative psychologies prioritize collective or group processes over isolated individual processes. Alternative psychologies view individuals as reflections of the larger culture or society. While the various alternative psychologies do have differences, they also have common themes such as those outlined in your course text: meaning-making, collective construction of psychological reality, time-dependent processes, and normative explanations.
Liberation psychology, which is one type of alternative psychology, has been used to address the needs of the poor and the oppressed in Latin America. With liberation psychology, the focus is on social change. Social change is possible when attempts are made to improve the conditions of the entire community rather than to only address the needs of one specific individual within the group. Additionally, this type of alternative psychology makes a difference by addressing challenges of the native people where they live, in their professions, and in the world around them. Liberation psychology also helps people understand what they need in order to facilitate change.

There is considerable tension within psychoanalysis regarding the place of
social context in the individual’s inner life. In recent years, applications of
psychoanalytic theory have extended to contexts outside of the therapeutic
setting, and psychoanalytic scholars have increasingly attended to issues of race
and culture within the therapeutic setting. The present article focuses on appli-
cations of psychoanalytic theory in clinical and community contexts, with an
emphasis on racial and cultural diversity. The author proposes an approach to
clinical and community interventions that integrates multiple theoretical per-
spectives (e.g., psychoanalytic, community, multicultural) to advance practitio-
ners’ and consultants’ engagement with issues of diversity, and considers how
practice with racially and culturally diverse populations can inform existing
psychoanalytic theory. Two case examples, one from psychotherapy and the
other from a community intervention, are presented to illustrate the ways in
which psychoanalytic theory can benefit therapeutic work and consultation
across sociocultural contexts. Implications of the experiences of minority indi-
viduals and communities for psychoanalytic theory, research, practice, and
education are discussed.

Authors' Introduction
The study of culture and mental health is an interdisciplinary endeavor with a long history, but psychology has only been fitfully involved with the ongoing conversation. Cultural psychiatry, by contrast, represents a decades‐long interdisciplinary endeavor primarily involving psychiatrists and anthropologists. One problem is that the anthropological view of culture, not as independent variable but as deep context, has been unfamiliar to psychologists until relatively recently. Although anthropological views have influenced researchers in cultural psychology, at times profoundly, collaborations between cultural and clinical psychologists remain uncommon.
Our paper in Social and Personality Psychology Compass describes one way of thinking about how cultural psychology and clinical psychology might be integrated, to the mutual benefit of both disciplines. We advocate a psychological approach to culture and mental health that goes beyond simply stating that ‘culture matters’, hoping to go beyond descriptions of group differences to an exploration of the processes by which cultural context shapes health and well‐being. Ideally, the emerging discipline combines the strengths of cultural psychology and clinical psychology, drawing on the theories, methodologies, and empirical literatures of both.
Indeed, in many ways, cultural–clinical psychology is not new. Psychologists have conducted research on culture and mental health for decades, and we draw on this work extensively in describing our approach. Nonetheless, the specific integration of cultural and clinical psychology is just beginning to emerge as an organized field of study. This teaching and learning guide includes some current work in this field, but emphasizes the various contributions that have shaped our view of what cultural–clinical psychology might become.
Most of the resources listed here draw from long‐established disciplines that have contributed to cultural–clinical psychology: cultural, cross‐cultural, and multicultural psychology; cultural psychiatry; and medical anthropology. Regardless of theoretical perspective or specific content, o.

Sample Response to the Discussion Question
In this response, there will be four main points. They are, first, the change that humanistic psychology brought; second, how that change affected psychologists' understanding of human nature; third, ways the humanistic psychologists asked their questions and conducted their research; and fourth, how those methods differed from behaviorists' ways of doing so.
Abraham Maslow, considered the founder of third force or humanistic psychology, wrote in 1969 that he found it necessary to avoid being “anti-Freudian” or “anti-behaviorist,” and to adopt—even if it meant taking serious intellectual risks—an untested attitude; namely, to view human beings from the perspective of psychological health and potential rather than otherwise. He wrote that it was time for psychology to concern itself with understanding what human beings could do if properly nourished and nurtured (what was their potential?), rather than trying to elucidate merely their behavioral functioning or their mental illnesses. He advocated a key change in psychologists’ view of science, as he had written in his earlier Psychology of Science (1966): to consider human beings as free and autonomous persons and to shift psychology as a science away from the idea that our goal is prediction and control of human beings. In his words, “Do we ourselves want to be predicted and predictable? Controlled and controllable?” (1966, p.729). These ideas—looking at human healthiness and potential, treating humans as free and autonomous persons, and viewing our science as a science of spontaneity and of the real concerns of real people living in their real worlds—formed the central core of the new third force in psychology, which deliberately separated itself from the older dominating schools of thought, behaviorism and psychoanalysis.

Having now reviewed the four major theoretical and historical models in psychology in Chapter 5, this chapter illustrates how integration is achieved in the actual science and practice of clinical psychology. In addition to psychological perspectives per se, a full integration of human functioning demands a synthesis of psychological factors with both biological and social elements. This combination of biological, psychological, and social factors comprises an example of contemporary integration in the form of the biopsychosocial perspective. It is worse to be living but lacking life than it is to be dead. Therefore, one who exist in vain is one who does not exist at all. Mankind often becomes inclined to follow a particular established order, regardless of how right or wrong it is. The progression of the established is strictly dependent on the vision of the establisher. The authors of Pride & Prejudice and Watership Down pinpointed a particular direction that was to be followed…or to be created. In both novels, an inordinate decision was presented to the main characters and influenced by outside forces. Austen and Adams highlighted the pro et contra of society by instituting a societal standard, presenting a decision, and unveiling the product of consequence.
Fore mostly, Austen and Adams incorporate the influence of the setting. The reader is shown a prosaic establishment by the authors. After examining the exposition of each book, the audience will notice how the established order will act as a catalyst to the events to come. For example, when Fiver states, “There isn’t any danger here, at this moment. But it’s coming-it’s coming. Oh Hazel, look! The field! It’s covered in blood!” (Adams 7). Specifically, in Watership Down, the phenomena to come were clearly foreshadowed in the beginning. Fiver was purposefully given a supernatural ability to anticipate the future. Adams used fivers character to present a particular retrospective to his audience-the blindness of hoi polloi. The events within the setting of the novel makes it clear that society is being criticized, and not praised. The initial conversation between Hazel and Fiver is a prime example of Adam’s distaste in society’s thoughtlessness. Hazel emphasized, “The whole warren? Don’t be silly. They won’t come. They’ll say you’re out of your wits” (Adams 7). Regarding this, Fiver immediately replied, “Then they’ll be here when the bad thing comes. You must listen to me, Hazel. Believe me, something very bad is close upon us and we ought to go away” (Adams 7). The setting is representative of how lethal it is to ignore the signs of the present, because the future is not so forgiving. Considering this, the purpose behind the setting’s constant fluctuation is justified. Jane Austen took a far different foreboding approach to the process, in which, the imperilment would strike. The setting of Pride & Prejudice is more imbibed within the actual character itself. Austen specifically uses setting as a means to uncloak what type of society the characters live in. Pride & Prejudice unhinges another type of blindness present in society-inferiority. On the subj.

Born in Syracuse, NY to parents, Robert and Shelly and raised with his brother, Luke and sister, Colleen, he graduated high school and college before working as a teacher for over 40 years at Marcellus High School. He married, Ellen and had 3 wonderful sons, Luke Jr., Garry and Neil, whom he loved dearly.
He was a wonderful and honorable man. I don't consider myself merely lucky to be his son, I've been downright blessed. He and my mother gave me the most profound gift that parents can give--the feeling deep down inside that I am loved and cherished. My father respected, admired, and trusted me. And I loved and respected him equally.
Of course, my father played a huge role in shaping who I am. I learned from the master how to think funny and make people laugh. He was my comedic sparring partner. Embracing GenAI - A Strategic Imperative
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
