Direct use of geothermal energy can support Kenya's goal of food security. Currently, only 23MW of geothermal is directly used, mainly for greenhouses, drying, and spas. Geothermal can enhance growth through greenhouses, fish farms, and pastures. It can add value by processing meat, milk, and honey. Preservation through drying and cold storage can reduce post-harvest losses. Strategies to expand direct use include demonstrating technology, establishing industrial parks near fields, engaging communities through partnerships, and developing large greenhouses near key projects. The next steps are to encourage private investment, establish industrial parks, and support community direct use projects.

Hence there is a need to explore alternative techniques which can address issues concerned with traditional farming practices, one of such techniques is vertical farming. • 40 ton/hr of brine and 20 ton/hr of steam at 1.6 bar
produced from MW03.
• Brine heats fresh water to 80°C.
• Heated fresh water used to provide energy and water
for DU applications

• A greenhouse measuring 8m by 24m
• Hot fresh water used to heat a hydroponics greenhouse to
regulate temperature and humidity
• Benefits: early maturity, higher productivity, reduced
incidences of diseases, higher returns.
