We are in the midst of another industrial revolution, with the abundance of low cost digital manufacturing and connected devices. Surviving this revolution requires adaptability, which translates as creativity, curiosity, productivity... all the things that makers do for fun. For the most time of human history, life was local and linear. Local in the way that anything that happened was close by, a least within a walking distance. Linear in the way that your life was the same as your father and your children. Nothing changed.
Just like the evolution of man, technology improvements follow an evolutionary progress. New ideas or products are to begin with immature and fragile with slow improvements. Then the progress accelerates until the products become mature and taken for granted. Then the cycle repeats and a new layer of technology is added to the previous. This process is exponential. One such observation of exponential is Moore’s Law.
Any new technology that gets wide acceptance in society needs to be adopted by people. We will explore that type of people are the first to adopt new things, and what types come later.
L04 Adjacent Possible

Many people have believe that new ideas come from brilliant inventors that have lightbulb moments or an epiphany. Greek scholar Archimedes had a Eureka moment, Newton discovered the theory of gravity when the apple fell on his head, and so on. This idea has been popularized, but the truth is quite different. Most discoveries are based on long evaluation - slow hunches, and collaboration.

Stessa storia è successa a Nokia, azienda finlandese colosso della telefonia mobile che, dopo l’avvento nel 2007 dell’Iphone (uno degli episodi più rappresentativi della storia del business) decise di investire - due anni dopo (2009) - ben 8,1 miliardi di dollari in Navteq, la prima azienda a commercializzare dati di navigazione e mappatura stradale.
Navteq controllava quattrocentomila chilometri di sensori del traffico in 35 grandi città e 13 Paesi. L’azienda finlandese era convinta che investire in questo asset sarebbe stata la scelta “strategica” migliore per respingere l’avanzata di Google e Apple e rafforzare la propria quota di mercato.
Poi un giorno, in Israele, nasceva Waze che, invece di puntare sulle infrastrutture fisiche, raccoglieva i dati e le informazioni che gli utenti, attraverso gli smartphone, inviavano in tempo reale. Il costo marginale (ossia ogni fonte in più di informazione) era pari a 0, a differenza del sistema messo su da Nokia. Il resto della storia già la conosciamo.
Il successo di Waze e delle Organizzazioni Esponenziali è dovuto a due fattori chiave:

At any given time, with all the knowledge we have, new knowledge can emerge. We call this the adjacent possible. It explains why new inventions are invented when they are, and why they are not possible before. Adjacent possible is a very useful term to understand the progress of technology. Technology evolves by using prevailing technologies to improve upon. Thus technology is combinatorial and built in layers. With each layer new ideas can be built upon the previous layers. Thus Gall's Law says that any complex system that works is built of simpler systems that work.
We will look at the adjacent possible and some ideas that came when all the enabling technologies are available. We also look at an idea that was not possible to build at the time, Charles Babbage engines.

The Digital Divides or the third industrial revolution: concepts and figures
It is usual to think about the digital divide as a very concrete aspect of the impact of ICTs, mainly concerning whether there is an existence of infrastructures (sometimes computers, sometimes computers connected to the Internet).
It is usual to think about digital literacy as the ability of someone to switch on a computer and playing some cards game, sending an e-mail and, optimistically, run some word processor and type in a love letter.
It is usual to think about ICTs as something that won’t make disappear the hunger in the world or heal the thousands of people suffering from countless diseases, specially in places where citizens live with less than one dollar a day.
It is usual to think about the digital divide as something that does not affect me, as I live on the sunny side of the world, in a developed country that will last this way for centuries.
With the aim to dismantle all these (almost) false assumptions, the seminar will try and give "correct" definitions for concepts such as Digital Divide, Digital Literacy, eReadiness or eAwareness and show examples on how ICTs can help underdeveloped and developing countries to reach higher quotas of welfare… and how so-called developed countries can exchange places with the lesser developed ones in case they do not pay attention to what is happening in a global world.

L04 Adjacent Possible
At any given time, with all the knowledge we have, new knowledge can emerge. We call this the adjacent possible. It explains why new inventions are invented when they are, and why they are not possible before. Adjacent possible is a very useful term to understand the progress of technology. Technology evolves by using prevailing technologies to improve upon. Thus technology is combinatorial and built in layers. With each layer new ideas can be built upon the previous layers. Thus Gall's Law says that any complex system that works is built of simpler systems that work.
We will look at the adjacent possible and some ideas that came when all the enabling technologies are available. We also look at an idea that was not possible to build at the time, Charles Babbage engines.

We have many examples of that and will start this journey it one of the most important innovation that has come in our lifetimes, the smartphone. We will explore the impact of the smartphone and the fate of existing companies at the time when iPhone, the first smartphone as we know them, was introduced to the world.
We will also look at other examples from history. Then we look at the broader picture, past industrial revolutions and the one that we are experiencing now, the fourth industrial revolution. Specifically we look briefly at the technologies that fuel this revolution, for example artificial intelligence, robotics, drones, internet of things and more.

It is usual to think about the digital divide as a very concrete aspect of the impact of ICTs, mainly concerning whether there is an existence of infrastructures (sometimes computers, sometimes computers connected to the Internet).
It is usual to think about digital literacy as the ability of someone to switch on a computer and playing some cards game, sending an e-mail and, optimistically, run some word processor and type in a love letter.
It is usual to think about ICTs as something that won’t make disappear the hunger in the world or heal the thousands of people suffering from countless diseases, specially in places where citizens live with less than one dollar a day.
It is usual to think about the digital divide as something that does not affect me, as I live on the sunny side of the world, in a developed country that will last this way for centuries.
With the aim to dismantle all these (almost) false assumptions, the seminar will try and give "correct" definitions for concepts such as Digital Divide, Digital Literacy, eReadiness or eAwareness and show examples on how ICTs can help underdeveloped and developing countries to reach higher quotas of welfare… and how so-called developed countries can exchange places with the lesser developed ones in case they do not pay attention to what is happening in a global world.

The smartphone has completely changed how people communicate, collaborate, discover, shop and do all sorts of things. This always-on device is in order of magnitude more powerful than the biggest computers in the 60s and now we carry it with us wherever we go. The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community. As a Notes and Domino customer, you may have faced challenges with unexpected user counts and license costs. You probably have questions on how this new licensing approach works and how to benefit from it. Most importantly, you likely have budget constraints and want to save money where possible. Don’t worry, we can help with all of this!
We’ll show you how to fix common misconfigurations that cause higher-than-expected user counts, and how to identify accounts which you can deactivate to save money. There are also frequent patterns that can cause unnecessary cost, like using a person document instead of a mail-in for shared mailboxes. We’ll provide examples and solutions for those as well. - The first major revolution took millions of years to begin. …and thousands of years to take hold.
- The next one took hundreds of years. …and the latest one took dozens.
- In the Information Age, the pace of everything is accelerating.
- Now anyone can access the world’s greatest knowledge and communication resource.
- Neil Gershenfeld, a leader in digital fabrication.
- Just as the internet democratised connection, now the tools of production are becoming affordable to all.
- Welcome to the Maker Revolution!
- Revolutions have to happen somewhere. Shared workshop spaces are key.
- It’s not THAT type of hacking. Hacking is a gentle, playful activity. It’s about tinkering, improving and creating.
- Is this a small, niche movement? No – 2,000 listed just as “hackerspaces”.
- It’s not just about “techie” things like electronics and computers. Art & design, content, performance, the natural world, genetics, etc.
- So what tools does the Maker Movement use? Here are three big types: 3D printer, CNC machines, laser cutter.
- And don’t forget the humble tools of domestic DIY.
- Focusing on just one for a moment: 3D printing.
- Plastic objects are typical.
- But what about chocolate …or glass?
- Metals
- This is a 3D-printed house.
- Some amazing prosthetics.
- Even organs and body parts.
- So what happens in a makerspace? A community comes together.
- We make things together, casually and at events. This is a game making weekend.
- And this is Raspberry Jam. We’ve had primary school kids and people in their eighties.
- When we investigate or make something, it becomes a project.
- A few examples from makerspaces around the world.
- …and from our place.
- Everyone is talking about entrepreneurship these days. Well, sometimes, projects can become products.
- Makerbot came out of a makerspace.
- So did Pebbl.
- And Square.
- Here’s Mitch Altman again.
- To wrap-up, think about it like the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs. Those best suited to their environment survived.
- This is a time of change so we need to be adaptable. We can do that by being curious and creative.
- And we have the tools to hack everything around us. So we can make our own futures.
