This study examined the use of digital badges and learning analytics to explore learner participation in a MOOC. The researchers analyzed data from a 4-week MOOC on social media for active learning that included modules, videos, discussions, quizzes and assignments. Badges were awarded for participating in discussions, scoring 80% or higher on quizzes, and completing assignments. The study found that participants who earned badges had significantly higher levels of engagement across modules, as measured by content access, discussion posts and assignment submissions, compared to non-badge earners. The more badges participants earned, the more consistently they were engaged throughout the course. However, the researchers note that deeper exploration is still needed of relationships between badges and engagement
