DIZZEE RASCAL – BOY IN A CORNER
Front cover
Boy in da Corner was the debut
album of UK Grime MC Dizzee
Rascal. It was released when he
was 17 years old. The album was
extremely successful as it got high
praise from music critics it even
managed to win a Mercury Prize
Award.
On the front cover of the album you see the
artist himself Dizzee Rascal sitting in the
corner of a yellow room. This links back to the
album of the album ‘Boy in da corner’ as you
can visually see the title of the album which is
good for the audience to see as it visually
signifies the name of the album.
The stylistic conventions of the album stay
consistent throughout the styling of the album
as the black and yellow theme is carried on
throughout the digipak. The typography is very
bold as the black writing makes the name of
artist stand out. The clothing that Dizzee
Rascal is wearing is a genre signifier as it is
clothing that the UK grime were typically
wearing.
Front cover
The stylistic conventions that were evident on
the front cover of the album are carried on to
the CD Cover as well as the whole digipak.
The CD cover is very simplistic as it is just one
consistent bright yellow colour with the
typography standing out as there is more then
one colour used. For example, the name of
the artist is in black and the name of the
album is in white.
There is a black figure that is representing a
black silhouette of the artist Dizzee Rascal.
In the digipak there is a booklet that is included which
gives the owners extra content. This part of the booklet
includes a message from the artist that allows him to
thank everyone that helped him release his debut album.
The messages are not grammatically correct throughout
as words like ‘Wiv’ and slang words like ‘Wahgwan’. This
is an image he wants to portrait as grime music is
commonly associated with being real and coming from
the streets which is why he writes like he speaks. His
language is representative of where is from as he shouts
out East London.
Also, in the digipak there is an image that has a lot of
different photographs and objects pile up together. The
photographs are very clear as you can see a little boy that
has a high resemblance of Dizzee Rascal himself which
implies that these are photographs from his childhood. The
magazine about So Solid Crew allows the audience to
create a link with Dizzee Rascal as this will make them feel
like they have a similar interest in music.
The back cover of the album is very similar to the front cover
as the stylistic design is identical as the typography or colour
scheme as not changed at all. The back cover is very
simplistic as it only features the track list. The artists that
feature some of the music are put in yellow with a light back
border which doesn’t allow them to get any attention from
Dizzee Rascals album as the black bold writing keeps the
attention on the name of his music.
