1. This album connotes and conveys the idea
and imagery that it would be suitable for
children and that the genre is quite sweet
and loving, but the hinting of the dark woods
and the album title of “selfish machines”
indicates that it actually isn’t, and therefore
portrays the album as bring suitable in the
experimental rock genre. The woods give
across a Fairy-tale like feel towards the
audience, but can also portray a mysterious
and dangerous vibe like Grimm fairy tales (in
this instance, Hansel and Gretel), which can
intrigue them as to what style of music this
album may possess. The box of
light can portray innocence and purity in the
children, and that they don’t know what to
expect from the “selfish machines” which
could be the grandma in the gingerbread
house if we are going along with the
fairy tale, but in real life it could represent
how children are the hope and the new light
in the world full of “selfish machines” with
darkness that is expected to come and
destroy the light from the dark woods in the
background.
The font matches the fairy
tale theme and the colours of the
white dress shirt and box. The box
stands out from the
dark background of the woods which
can indicate hope for the children
and also the fans of the CD.

2. The colours in this digipak match her hair and lips, with the use of light and aesthetic
colours to represent this album as a pop album. The reds could indicate love and
passion, along with the roses to represent romance, but her having her eyes closed and
looking graceful and dainty makes her look more angelic, like her music. There is the
same recurring theme on every page to make it all relate and not have any random
images breaking the theme. The images are all from the same photo-shoot as well to
make sure the colours and themes are the same for each side.
The text is subtle to not
distract and take away the
dainty and graceful feel to
the digipak, but also visible
to reach out to the fans of
this artist. The text doesn’t
need to be big or bold
because she is a well
known star, so her face
would be very recognisable
alone, which is why a close
up of her face is used to
capture the audiences
attention and influence
them to buy the CD.

3. This CD cover clearly represents genre of
rock, the loud and in your face nature to
reflect the theme of the songs. The
lighting is dark to make the cover more
eerie, with the use of black and red
colours to scream that this album’s genre
is in fact rock, as these are the clear and
typical colours for this genre. The font is
also quite creepy and bloodcurdling,
reminding the audience of horror films or
nightmares.
The costumes and masks represent mistrust and cynical connotations
towards the theme of music that is expected to be found inside, and the
background is like a cell with the bars, indicating that they have escaped
prison or a mental asylum, which means that they are dangerous and
heavy, not suitable for a young audience.
