The student created a music video and ancillary materials for a punk rock album. They chose recurring themes of sparks and fire to link the projects together and represent the edgy nature of punk rock. Stylistic elements like clothing, makeup, and typography were also kept consistent. By closely following punk rock conventions and creating a clear brand identity through the spark motif, the student aimed to effectively promote recognition of the album, artist, and their record label.

2.  I chose the song “You & I” by PVRIS because that band falls
under the genre of punk rock, which is the genre I wanted to
use for my project. I have portrayed the genre by the style of
clothing my actors/actresses wear in my video, such as
ripped jeans and shirts, as well as thick eyeliner and
dark/coloured hair. The themes of emotions and
relationships are also present in my music video, which are
present in a large majority of punk rock videos, as well as
bring partly performance based. I also had my actors use
sparklers which adds to the theme of sparks throughput my
products, linking them together. As I followed the most
predominant the codes and conventions of a typical punk
rock video, the genre is easily recognisable so the audience
will be happy to buy it, as it fits the stereotypical
components of a punk rock video/album.

3.  I kept my digipak front cover quite simple, by just
having one image to not make the album look busy
and overcrowded. A busy cover indicates lively and
upbeat songs within the album which conveys a
more pop album, such as the cover of girls aloud I
added to this slide, so using one image of a spark
indicates the music within the album being quite
lively and bold, though more mature and deep
compared to popular songs and their music.
Furthermore, the use of dark colours supports the
conventions of my genre even more, as punk rock is
associated with black, white, and deep colours such
as red, which will allow my products to attract and
be sold to the correct and suited target audience.
 This has also allowed me to just be able to promote
the main features being the album title and the
artist name. This will ensure that the audience will
focus on only these components, so will then be
more likely to remember the product names instead
of being distracted by other features such as a lively
image or other text. I also used a picture of a spark
which links to the poster and music video, which
gives continuity through all my products.

4.  For the left inside cover of my digipak, I put a
quote of a lyric of “You & I” to link to my video,
with the use of sparks in the shape of a heart
which represents the emotions that are portrayed
in the song’s music video and album. I added the
artist’s name at the bottom to illustrate who sang
the song and songs in the album, to allow the
artist to gain awareness and attention.
The back cover of my digipak is slightly different
to the theme of sparks throughout all my other
products, by having an image of the night sky. I
chose this image as it symbolises the end of the
album as the night sky indicates the end of a
day. The image was also quite simplistic which I
liked, as it then doesn’t deter the focus of the
audience away from the song titles and record
label name in the top right hand corner.

5.  I used recurring themes throughout my video and ancillary tasks,
such as fire and sparks, with the title of the album “Ignite”
portraying this theme even further. These represent danger and
edginess, which is commonly associated with punk rock music
videos and products, so I stuck to the conventions of this genre
in that way, but also linking all my tasks together using this. The
style of clothing in my music video links to the punk rock genre
due to the thick eyeliner, dyed hair and style of clothing such as
shirts, boots and ripped jeans. I also kept other features such as
the same fonts, typography, colours and style throughout my
ancillary tasks to have an even clearer link between my products.
This created a brand identity with my products and record label,
by associating this album to the particular theme of sparks
which will get my record label, artist and album to be further
recognised, thus having an effective combination between my
music video and ancillary tasks.
