- DHCP allows network administrators to centrally manage and automate the assignment of IP configurations to devices on a network. The DHCP server provides clients with an IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway.
- To install a DHCP server on Windows Server 2012, an administrator selects the DHCP server role, configures authorization for the DHCP service, and restarts the service.
- The advantages of DHCP include centralized IP management, automatic client configuration, support for various client types, and elimination of duplicate IP addresses. The disadvantages include potential security issues, single points of failure, and additional configuration requirements for multi-segment networks.

3. What is DHCP ?
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol.
is a protocol that lets network
administrators
manage centrally and automate the
assignment of IP (Internet Protocol)
configurations on a computer network
DHCP was created by the Dynamic Host
Configuration Working Group of the
Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)
INTRODUCTION TO DHCP
4. DHCP Server DHCP
Client
The DHCP server provides the client with the following configuration information:
•IP address
•Subnet mask
•Default gateway
16. 13- Post Deployment
- Click on the warning icon and then click on ‘Complete DHCP Configuration’
14- On DHCP Post-Install wizard, click Next’
17. 15- - On Authorization, select a domain user account that haspermissions to create objects in the Net Services
container in Active directory (For security lock-down) or simply use a domain admin account and click Next
18. 16- Confirm on summary page that the security groups had been created and Authorizing DHCP
server role done. Close the screen
19. 17- For the security groups to come into effect, we need to restart theDHCP Server service
- Click on Tools on Server Manager menu and click on Services
18- Locate ‘DHCP Server’ service, click on
the Restart Service icon to restart the
service
20. Advantage Of DHCP
.
IP address management Centralized network client configuration Support of BOOTP clients
Support of local clients and remote clients Network booting Large network support
1. No need to manually configure
2. No need to keep a record of the IP
4. IP duplication is eliminated as
DHCP automatically tracks IP.
3. Auto assign a new IP address if
you move to other network
22. Disadvantage Of DHCP
1) Only some of the DHCP client
implementations work properly
with the DHCP Server in windows
server 2003.
2) The information in dhcp server
is automatically deliverd to all the
dhcp clients .Thus , it become
important to put correct
information into dhcp server.
3) If there is a single dhcp server
and it is not available, lease will
not be requested or renewed .this
way it will be single point of failure
for the network.
4)In oreder to use dhcp on a
multisegment network , DHCP
server or relay agent should be
placed on each segment .you can
also ensure that the router is
forwarding Bootstrap protocol
