Students at RSK High School in Hyderabad participated in the Design for Change competition to help address problems in their community. They felt that garbage was a major issue causing suffering. Through educating others about composting and conducting a rally, over 100 students helped families and villagers reduce waste and spread awareness of composting. Implementing composting in their school and village, the students hoped to decrease garbage and pollution in a sustainable way.

2. DESIGN FOR CHANGE AT RSK
A foreign English teacher came to our school and told
us about the Design for Change competition. We
were excited to be a part of the competition and also
to help bring a change in our society.

3. FEEL….
 In our society, we have many problems. We feel
very bad because these problems cause so many
people suffering.
 Today’s children are tomorrow’s citizens, so we feel
it is important for students to bring awareness and
change to society.
 There are many problems in our village, but we
think the garbage is the major problem. The waste
spreads disease and is harmful to living beings. So
we want to help decrease the garbage.

4. IMAGINE….
 We thought of many ways that people can reduce
the garbage such as…
 Recycling
 Compost
 Reducing use of plastic
 Disposing of garbage in dustbins
But we think one solution is most important for people to
know about…

5. DO…COMPOST!
 We designed a letter about how to make compost
and a chart that showed what you can compost and
what you cannot compost.

6.  On September 10th, we led a rally to educate the
village about waste and pollution and we visited
homes to educate people about how we can
prepare the compost in our homes.
 We made a plan to start composting in our school
and once the compost is ready, will make a school
garden.

7. We taught the nursery students to throw their
leftover rice in the compost bin

8. IMPACT
 We visited 47 homes to talk to families about
compost.
 Our rally covered 2 km and our message was heard
by hundreds of people in our village.
 Over 100 students participated in our rally and
many younger students learned new things about
compost and the environment

9. SHARE…
 We feel it is a very good experience to go to the
homes and talk with our neighbours about how to
make a change
 In our own homes we discuss with our parents and
friends and ask them to use the compost process to
reduce the garbage

10. SUCCESS!
 Our hard led to success.
 We feel good for helping our community.
 With this opportunity we got a chance to save our
society.
