We have been members at Graceland Baptist Church since the fall of 2010, and have since served in worship ministry, teaching classes, & missions committee
“We both noticed a blurb about an upcoming short term trip to Indonesia that said ‘teachers needed.’ This is how our journey started…”

Lindsey
Leading professional development at Charis National Academy.
We experienced a new culture- we didn’t really know exactly what we presenting about we got there. The culture was more laid back; we didn’t need to know! I was most unprepared and nervous about this preschool music session, but it was went really well!
2011 Trip to Indonesia (3 of 3)
Chris with orchestra
Lindsey
Working with students in a newly formed youth orchestra.
This was exciting to us because we were able to use our gifts and experiences as music educators right away in another culture. We were able to bring some instruments for the orchestra donated by a local music store.
The orchestra gave us an opportunity to return the following year.
We met Greg and Liz Geisen while we were there. They were surprised we had never taken the Perspectives on the World Christian Movement course, so we took the class the next spring before we returned to Indonesia.
Chris
As we were preparing to return to Indonesia, we asked for donations. In addition to instruments, we looked for music teaching resources. We contacted a national sheet music distributor that we use to order music for our own classrooms. We were surprised when they generously donated several large boxes of resources. As we were unpacking the boxes, we recognized the resources since we used many of them in our own classrooms. This is when I realized that these were more than donations for the school; this was providing what we would need to teach overseas.

Lindsey at Charis
Lindsey
In 2012, we lead a team back to Indonesia
We were able to go into the classrooms and work with the students.
We visited and taught all of the music classes from 2 year olds up to seniors.

We helped with a one day camp for the youth orchestra, which had grown significantly since we were last there.
We also had the chance to perform with the orchestra in a special Ramadan concert at the mall.

Chris speaking at university
Lindsey
During this trip we had the opportunity to speak about music education at a state university. We were led by a processional into the lecture hall by traditional dancers and orchestra and given gifts. We spoke for an hour and answered questions for about 2 hours.
We helped to build a relationship between Charis and the university.
Southeast Asia Map
Why are so many GBC going to Indonesia? (so many lost)
Indonesia is the 4th largest country in the world with over 250 million people and over 17,000 islands
Over half of the population lives on Java
Java is over 90% Muslim
We will be on the island of Java in the city of Malang.
Matthew 24:14
”And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” Matthew 24:14 (NIV)
Jesus commanded us to go to the nations and proclaim the Gospel, and do this until the end; until he returns.
We are going where God is sending us.
We are going to where we can be the most effective with our abilities in an area of the world where Jesus is unknown.

Our Ministry (1 of 5)
Charis
Lindsey
For the first year, we will be primarily focused on learning Bahasa Indonesian
Until kids are in school, my primary role will be at home and plan to eventually work with Chris in ministry
We will be working at Charis National Academy, which serves students in preschool through high school. It was founded in 2001 and currently enrolls over 700 students. Charis is the top city in the school and attracts the children of high ranking officials and reserves at least 25% of their seats for underprivileged students.
Charis’ mission is to “prepare leaders for the future of Indonesia by providing them with an effective Christian education that forges character, inspires creativity, and nurtures leadership.”
Our Ministry (2 of 5)
Testimony
Lindsey
Charis is unapologetically Christian in a Muslim country. All students take a Bible class as part of their curriculum, which integrates missions. Each grade takes a mission trip every school year.
A member of our mission team sent me an email this week with the following story that illustrates how Charis is transforming the live of students in Indonesia: “I am using the Missio Dei curriculum with the 7-12 students. During this time, I give assignments where they have to journal, answer questions or write or present their testimonies. My favorite story is that one year, a girl in grade 11 of the majority faith, got up during her 2 min testimony and said "I am a Muslim, and I believe Jesus was a prophet". The next year, I couldn't believe it when I read one of her papers. It explained how several months earlier during her senior year she had come to believe in Jesus as her Lord and Savior. During their mission trip, she was one of the presenters to tell a Bible story to elementary students. Wow! Amazing. I asked her if she had a church, and she did and said that people were discipling her. A beautiful story....”

Our Journey
Chris
For most missionaries, it take about 5 years from when you accept God’s calling to when you get on the field.
We started in 2011 with our first short term trip
Appointed by Pioneers in December 2013
Now in our final months getting biblical training, raising support, finishing teaching, downsizing and preparing to move overseas
