The document provides evaluations of different assignments completed as part of a digital graphic narrative development course. It includes evaluations of a shape task where the student created an image of a giraffe using basic shapes, a rotoscope task where the student traced an image of an orangutan, a text-based task where the student experimented with text formatting and effects, a comic book style task, a photography task capturing different emotions, and an illustration task. For each assignment, the student provides what they liked about their work and how they could improve if doing the task again, focusing on adding more details, textures, and refinement. Feedback on the proposal and ideas is also provided, praising the detail but suggesting adding more reference images
3. Evaluation
What did you like about your image?
The shape and structure of the main body represent the original animal well and it is easily
identifiable as a Giraffe. I managed to successfully recreate the main features of the face,
including the eyes and nose. The gradient of the markings on the animal work well to represent
the real thing, and help to create tone within the image. The colours I have used to create the
image portray a giraffe well, and are fit for purpose. This is because I used a colour selection tool
to select colours from the original image and used them when adding colour to my image.
What would you improve if you did it again?
If I were to do this shape task again I would think about adding texture and shadow to make the
image look more 3D and realistic. I would also try to make the edges around the animal more
smooth so that the outline is neater.
5. Evaluation
What did you like about your image?
My Rotoscope image is easily identifiable as an Orangutan. The colours I have used are
appropriate for the animal as I again used the colour picker tool and selected colours from the
original image, and the different tones work well with the image. Using the Polygonal Lasso tool
in Photoshop made it easier to create a more true-to form shape and features, compared to just
using the shapes tool and having to warp the shape each time.
What would you improve if you did it again?
If I were to do this task again, I would add more detail such as texture and then shadows to give
the image depth. I would also include more tones to make the image less flat and more
interesting. I would try to ensure all the sections of the images were lined up more closely, as in
my image there are a few gaps.
7. Evaluation
What did you like about your image?
I prefer the images on the right, as they are more interesting and unique than the images on the
left. They are much more simplistic, as the only tools used were the tracking and leading tools,
which only changed the spacing of the image.
The top right image of text was created using the clipping mask tool, allowing me to place an
image into the text. Then, by using the layers styles I was able to select the stroke tool, and the
drop shadow tool to emphasise the outline of the letters.
The bottom right image was made after rasterizing the text, and then using the perspective tool
to change the perception of the image. After that I used the warp tool to slightly distort the
image. To then emphasise the shape I created with the letters, I used layer styles to add a
gradient overlay onto my image, choosing a light to dark colour range, and then selecting the
drop shadow and stroke tools to outline each letter more clearly.
What would you improve if you did it again?
If I were to do this task again I would use more techniques and tools in Photoshop to make more
interesting and usual text. I could do this by using patterns or textures within my text. I could also
use deeper shadows, or contours, giving them a bolder look, to make my letters stand out more.
For my gradient image, I could use a more complex gradient, with more colours, to make a very
tonal image.
11. Evaluation
What did you like about your image?
Out of my three comic book style images I prefer the last image, as the colours blend more and it
looks more realistic, almost like a painting rather than an image edit. For the first image that I
made, I put the settings in the middle, so there wasn’t a lot of something or too little of
something- everything was balanced. This worked well, as it helped to capture detail, as well as
keeping the animated look of the image.
I don’t like the middle/ second image as much as my other two images. I find it too simplistic, and
the image seems to just be blocks of colour. Due to the lack of colours used, the main subject
blends into the background, making It very 2D and flat in comparison to the other images where
more colours have been used. However, depending on the target audience, and the intention of
each image, each way of editing could work well within media.
What would you improve if you did it again?
If I were to use this technique again I would use the most colours possible and a medium amount
of detail so that the image doesn’t look like too realistic, but is very easy to identify to an
audience.
13. Evaluation
What did you like about your image?
I like that our group used an interesting way of photographing the different emotions, using the
Snapchat phone application as well as a model to create a story-like set of images which seemed
to interlink with one another when placed in a certain order. The images of the phone have a
shallow depth of field, making the background out of focus, concentrating the viewers attention
on the image. The light from the phone also draws in the viewers attention, due to the lack of
light in the rest of the image.
The other images also work well for this task because they accurately show the correct emotions,
I especially like the ‘happy’ image, as the model looks very natural which makes the image much
more realistic to the audience.
What would you improve if you did it again?
If I were to do this task again I would make sure to plan ahead before going out to take the shoot.
This means that I would be more prepared and my images would’ve been more thought out. I
also would’ve adjusted the camera settings differently as a couple of my images are not
completely in focus and have motion blur.
15. Evaluation
What did you like about your image?
I like the proportions of my image, I think they fit well for the subject I was drawing. I think the
contrast of dark and light shading works well with the image, and the feathers on the bird. The
shapes work well together and the detail of the head and wings are represented well on the
drawing.
What would you improve if you did it again?
If I were to draw my illustration again, I would try to make my image more original or unique. I
would add more shading and use different pencils, to create bolder shading and bigger range of
tones within the image.

Story Overview
My story- Hansel and Gretel is about a family who are very hungry and have run out of food. The parents
unwillingly leave the children in the forest to fend for themselves, but by leaving flint stones along the way, the
children find their way back. When they are left in the forest alone again, the children leave breadcrumbs but
they are eaten by birds, so they cannot find their way home. After a few days and all hope lost they come across
a house made of bread, and cakes and begin to pull bits off and eat it. An old woman comes out of the house
and offers to take care of them. After feeding them a big meal, she sends them to bed. But the next morning
throws Hansel in a stable and makes Gretel feed him every day until he gets fat enough to eat. After 4 weeks,
the witch decides to eat Hansel, and gets Gretel to check if the oven is hot enough to bake him in. But Gretel
sees through her plans and pushes her into the oven, and locks her in. While the witch is trapped and burns,
Gretel frees Hansel and they take the witches fortunes, and manage to find their way home to their family.
20. Production Methods
I will be making my images in Photoshop. To create my images, I will use a mixture
of techniques, such as Rotoscope and Shape Warping. This will help me to create
more cartoon-like images, which will be interesting for a young audience. I have
enjoyed using these techniques in previous work, and I think they will be the most
suitable for the quite simple look I want to create for my book. My images will be
accompanied by text on each page, in an easy to read font from DaFont.com.
Audience
My audience will be children around the age of 5-7. The book is not gender
focused, and will appeal to male and female children. It will also be written in
English, so will mainly be targeted at people in Britain, but it will also be targeted to
other English speaking countries such as Ireland, America, Canada and Australia.
Deadline
The deadline for my book is the 18th of December.
21. What are the strengths of the proposal? What areas of the proposal need further work?
The proposal shows exactly what is going to be
done. It shows clearly what ideas have been
thought of and is easy to understand.
I think the proposal does not need to be improved
at all because all boxes are filled and explain
clearly ideas.
What are the strengths of the idea generation? What areas of idea generation could have been
further developed?
The mind map is really detailed with good ideas.
The images are clearly annotated with specific
plans
I think that the mood board could be improved by
adding more examples of already made Hansel and
Gretel books and what they look like inside.
22. What are the strengths of the proposal? What areas of the proposal need further work?
You have given a very good detailed story preview,
helping understand what exactly the story is about
and what the main parts of the story are. Everything
you have written is easy to understand.
Go on to explain more about your production
method and what exactly each technique will do to
help you create your ideal book. Explaining what
the rotoscope can do and what the other
techniques can do. Wether that be helping you with
the smaller parts of the character’s/background or
helping you with the structure of something.
What are the strengths of the idea generation? What areas of idea generation could have been
further developed?
Your mind map is detailed and shows clear
understanding with how you would want each story
to pan out and come together. Also there are many
different options coming off each bubble showing
great detail with the different techniques that you
would perhaps want to use.
The mood board needs more images and
annotations showing perhaps how you want your
characters to turn out, that through look unrealistic
and more like cartoon’s or illustrated through
drawings. Then going onto annotate it explaining
what you like about It and what you want to use,
then perhaps explaining what you don’t like about it
and why some parts of it might not work for your
age group decided.
23. What are the strengths of the proposal? What areas of the proposal need further work?
The proposal is very detailed and easy to read and
the ideas have been thought out clearly.
Explain which parts of the images in the book will
the rotoscoping and the shape warping be used on.
What are the strengths of the idea generation? What areas of idea generation could have been
further developed?
There I lots of detail and shows how you have a
clear idea as to what the book will be like in all
areas. The images have been thought out as to
what they will be used for in the book.
Add more images of past Hansel and Gretel books
and illustrations to get other ideas for images.
24. Feedback Summary
Sum up your feedback.
The feedback said that both my proposal and idea generation were detailed and clear to
understand. It also said that my mood board needs more images and information to
show my ideas. It suggested that I should look at other Hansel & Gretel books to take
ideas from them. Lastly, it states I should expand on specific techniques I will use and
what I will use them for.
Which parts of your feedback do you agree with and why?
After reading all of my feedback, I agree with what has been said, as I do not have much
background information about other Hansel and Gretel books which have been
produced, and there is not much information on my mood board. I do also need to
specify more on which tools will be useful in the creation of my book and why.
Which parts of your feedback do you disagree with and why?
I do not disagree with any of the feedback given on my work.
31. Original Script
The original script for my book was extremely long, so I print screened the
majority of it to fit it onto a slide.
Due to how long the script is, and how much is in the story, I have condensed it
down to make it more simple and so that there is not too much going on
throughout the book. For example. Hansel and Gretel are taken into the forest
twice and have to find their way back- I left the first part out so that they only
travel to the forest once before they get lost.
Also, to make the ending more happy for the young audience I kept the family
whole, as the original script says that the mother has died when they return
however, I changed this so that she does not.
32. Final Script
There once was a very poor family, who had very little food… there was not enough for everyone.
One day, the father took Hansel and Gretel into the forest, even though he did not want to leave his children all alone, but
the mother told him he had to if they were to have any chance of surviving. So he left the children alone in the forest to
find food for themselves. Luckily, Hansel left a trail of breadcrumbs behind him so that they could find their way home.
They fell asleep in the forest, and had to wait until morning before they could return home.
But when they awake the next morning, the birds have eaten the crumbs and they can’t find their way home.
Hansel and Gretel come across a house made of sweets and other lovely treats.
The children were starving, so they each took handfuls of the house and gobbled them up.
An elderly woman comes outside and offers them a place to stay.
The woman gave the children a place to sleep after they all shared a huge feast together.
But the woman was actually an evil witch! The next morning she threw Hansel in a cage and forced Gretel to force feed
him to fatten him up!
A few weeks later, the witch began to prepare to cook Hansel, and asked Gretel to climb in the oven to check if it was hot
enough to bake Hansel in…
…but Gretel was smart, and pushed the evil witch in the oven and locked the door.
Gretel unlocked the cage and set Hansel free.
Hansel and Gretel ran from the evil witch’s house with all of her gold!
They returned home to their parents and were able to buy a feast for them all to eat. They lived happily ever after and
were never bothered by evil witches again!
