Editor's Notes
Good afternoon ladies and gentleman.
I’m honoured to be part of this distinguished panel and to discuss youth employment in the hospitality industry
In our global hotel group with 1400 hotels worldwide and 8 distinctive brands we focus on making EVERY MOMENT MATTER and on creating a sustainable future.
Founded on 3pillars
THINK PEOPLE – always caring for our guests, employees and people in the supply chain
THINK COMMUNITY – creating shared value and providing employment to 95000 hoteliers. We also commit to providing employability training to 1400 underprivileged young people each year
THINK PLANET is about minimizing our footprint in terms of carbon energy and water. We always think about zero waste and zero plastics and focus on water stewardship in water stressed communities.
71 million young people are currently estimated to be unemployed worldwide (ILO estimate / international labour organisation)
The tourism and travel industry which offers 1/10 of is a perfect industry for many of these young people to create a better future.
Jobs in tourism and hospitality are frequently the first paid work many young people undertake. Although their importance may not be recognised by the individual at the time, these early work experiences can shape the future direction of an individual’s career and life course. These experiences often lead to life-long work, or at least lengthy periods of work, in the sector, which is unique in that it equips its talent with transferrable skills they can put to use in numerous other sectors, including retail, food and beverage and customer services
Working on providing a better future for young people is a goal of Radisson Hotel Group and of the Hotel Industry.
Last september the hotel industry, through the International Tourism Partnership, launched its 2030 sustainable goals. Collectively the industry will work on providing employability training for the children under 25years old to 1 million young people by 2030
Providing skills to young people also contributes to various UN Sustainable 17 Development Goals, notably
Goal 4 Quality education
Goal 8 Decent work
Goal 10 Reduced inequalities
What is Youth Career Initiative - YCI is the hotel industry’s global solution to youth unemployment
Through a programme which combines hands-on experience in a variety of hotel departments with classroom training, disadvantaged young people spend up to six months learning key skills, building their confidence, and taking the first step in their career.
We are currently running successful YCI programs in five countries ( Romania, Ethiopia, Lebanon, Senegal and Zambia) and exploring the possibilities to roll out in South Africa and Sierra Leone.
