INTRODUCTION
This unit gives you the opportunity to further develop your practical research skills in order to lay the
foundations for future self-directed projects later this stage and in the final stage. Academic
underpinning, evaluative thought processes and problem solving skills will be key in demonstrating that
you have the required tools to undertake an in depth critical review of a specific area within the fashion
business environment. A full range of primary research methods such as focus groups, interviews and
questionnaires will be designed and evaluated. There will be a more detailed and extensive
investigation of the secondary resources available to you through the College and University library and
e-library. You will be shown how to manage the research process and how to analyse and present your
research findings in the context of the fashion industry.
ASSESSMENT AND PROJECT BRIEF
• An individual 3,000 word report.
In this report you are required to complete a consumer research proposal and conduct qualitative and
quantitative research to assess consumer attitudes to a specific commercial issue in the fashion retail
industry. Your topic will be situated within one of the following areas of interest, which you will
formatively sign off with your Tutor in week 3.
1. Range development: how UK brands expand overseas and how this affects the product ranges.
2. Researching consumer attitudes: investigating Ethical and Sustainable concepts for retail.
3. Researching the Luxury Brand experience: how brands present their image in the omni-channel
marketplace (stores, online, outlets).
The report will allow you to study a consumer demographic that is of interest to you and will evidence
your ability to academically and commercially identify the aims and objective of a piece of individual
research, supported by a robust literature review and evaluation of secondary data. The research
methodology proposal will show your understanding and application of an appropriate research strategy
and analysis methods within an ethical framework. You will design, conduct and analyse a small
quantitative and qualitative study. To conclude the report you should include an evaluation of data from
the study, recommend improvements and identify the limitations of the study approach.

Dissertation Structure Guidelines
It will be important to set some broad guidelines and ground rules as well as highlighting the dissertation structure that your supervisors would like their students to adhere to. Suffice to say these issues have already been highlighted and discussed with you in detail in your PRISM unit.
In summary, when you start working on your dissertation and develop your thinking and findings a bit more, you may wish to have a chat with your supervisor; a call or Skype or using some other online tool. Also a good idea to send your supervisor your chapters as you complete them so that they can provide their comments as you make progress on other chapters. However please consult your supervisor if he/she wishes to consider an alternative approach.
There is a document called Assessment Guidelines on this Moodle site that gives a very brief outline of the suggested chapters involved in your dissertation and an idea of the number of words that are usually expected in each chapter.
In the meantime, as far as your dissertation structure is concerned, let us just remind you that as a general rule, we would suggest the following chapters and sections for your thesis.
-Title: A clear, concise statement of the topic.
-Abstract: The abstract is a summary of the whole dissertation. It presents all the major elements of your work in a highly condensed form. Maximum of 500 words.
- Contents page: clearly describing chapters and any sub-sections and related page numbers.
- Acknowledgement- Chapter 1 - Introduction: You need to set the scene for your dissertation, tell a story by providing some background to the importance of your chosen subject. You should also make your aims and objectives of the report very clear, by for example providing half a dozen bullets clearly describing what you have in mind and what you wish to explore. You should clearly state your "Research Question (s)" and state why your research is important, what is the research gap, how it contributes to the body of knowledge and potentially it’s significance to the practitioner’s world, and, what benefit will be achieved in carrying out your chosen piece of work.
- Chapter 2 - Literature Survey (LR): This is a very important part of your dissertation (particularly if you only rely on acquiring secondary data and body of knowledge). The aim will be for you to provide robust and credible literature relating to the subject matter. Use of some models/frameworks is encouraged. You will also get a better mark by providing a sound critic in your LR, i.e. what you agree with and what you don't, and, the reasons behind your argument/rationale.
- Chapter 3 - Research Methodology: Here you should describe the methodology used in gathering the data and information. You should make reference to both the primary, if any, (interviews, questionnaire, case study ...) and, secondary research methods (literature review and library based work...). 2. An introduction - give a brief comment on the overall principles of research evidence based practice and identify why research is relevant to your clincal practice.

Purpose of Assessment
The purpose of this assignment is to enable learners to develop advanced-level independent
research and critical problem-solving skills within a business context. Learners will develop
knowledge of, proficiency in, and application of a range of management research
methodologies including qualitative and quantitative research methods resulting in proposals/
recommendations.
The Assessment Task
In the current international economic environment, entrepreneurs and managers are
frequently required to undertake business planning, project and consultancy work in addition
to their core responsibilities. Frequently, these projects are focused upon investigating new
business opportunities or potential strategic changes in order to create, retain and extend
competitive position.
The assessment task is to produce a 7500 words (±10%) research project report based on an
independent research, which investigates a business/organisational or management problem,

issue or challenge, applies appropriate research techniques and analysis, and consequently
informs the development of a business plan and/ or results in recommendations for change.
Where the submission exceeds the stipulated word limit by more than 10%, the submission will
only be marked up to and including the additional 10%. Anything over this will not be included
in the final grade for the assessment item. Abstracts, bibliographies, reference lists, appendices
and footnotes are excluded from any word limit requirements.
Where a submission is notably under the word limit, the full submission will be marked on the

Purpose/scope - The final analytical research paper/project is intended to engage students in a real-world
issue pertaining to your respective internship. The paper’s general topic will be determined and agreed to by
the intern supervisor and student. The topic should be beneficial to the company and educational to the
student. Once the general topic is determined, the student is expected to define the research problem
(problem statement), collect the necessary data, and report on the findings. The length of the paper is not

Introduction
In the Prospectus, Proposal and Dissertation there are ten key or strategic points that need to be clear, simple, correct, and aligned to ensure the research is doable, valuable, and credible. These points, which provide a guide or vision for the research, are present in almost any research. They are defined within this 10 Strategic Points document.
The 10 Strategic Points
The 10 strategy points emerge from researching literature on a topic, which is based on, or aligned with, the defined need in the literature as well as the learner’s personal passion, future career purpose, and degree area. The 10 Strategic Points document includes the following ten key or strategic points that define the research focus and approach:
1. Topic – Provides a broad research topic area/title.
2. Literature review - Lists primary points for four sections in the Literature Review: (a) Background of the problem/gap and the need for the study based on citations from the literature; (b) Theoretical foundations (models and theories to be foundation for study); (c) Review of literature topics with key theme for each one; (d) Summary.
3. Problem statement - Describes the problem to address through the study based on defined needs or gaps from the literature.
4. Sample and location – Identifies sample, needed sample size, and location (study phenomena with small numbers and variables/groups with large numbers).
5. Research questions – Provides research questions to collect data to address the problem statement.
6. Hypothesis/variables or Phenomena - Provides hypotheses with variables for each research question (quantitative) or describes the phenomena to be better understood (qualitative).
7. Methodology and design - Describes the selected methodology and specific research design to address problem statement and research questions.
8. Purpose statement – Provides one sentence statement of purpose including the problem statement, methodology, design, population sample, and location.
9. Data collection – Describes primary instruments and sources of data to answer research questions.
10. Data analysis – Describes the specific data analysis approaches to be used to address research questions.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The discourses on seminar in academia are designed with an aim to provide with
opportunity to work with the reality by means of practical exposure on pertinent issues,
challenges and problems of the specified fields of study, say financial management,
marketing management, orhuman resourcesmanagement,andapply an empirical approach
of analyses and critical thinking whereby using the information generated through such a
discourse in organizational decision-making.
Working Guidelines
Step 1: Decide upon your area of scientific study. Your area of specialization of study and
personal interest both should match up while taking decision regarding the choice of
observation.
Step2: Find about 10 to 15 working papers/articles based on research outputs and product
the hard or electronic copies of all of them for review works.
Step 3: Review those articles as such that you can figure out pinpointed area of study that
could be conduct in the present context of Nepal. Here, you need to establish a gap for
research or scientific inquiry.
Step 4: Align your personal and professional interest with the area of study as stated above
and develop at least one missing link that insists you to undertake such a study.
Step 5: Proposewith the functional title of thestudy and discuss its overall scopeof thematic
and conceptual coverage.
Step 6: Perform a detailed review of various aspects linked to the area of present study. Use
APA system based style guidelines recommended by the college while performing
documentation of the review works. The main sections of review in an empirical study
should include as follows:
a. Review of conceptual and theoretical perspectives related to the areas of study.
b. Review of related policy documents in national and international contexts. Such
documents to be considered for review may include laws, bi-laws, agreements,
contracts, acts, regulations, directives, and so on.
c. Review of related studies
d. Development of conceptual framework of the study based on various reviews
performed as above.
2. Step 7: Make a presentation of key findings from overall review works. While doing so, focus
on key findings, suggestions for managerial implications, suggestions for further study,
conclusions and learning reflections.
Step 8: Logically elaborate the overall methodological aspects link with these study. Include
the study approach, type of data used, tools and techniques deployed during the study,
nature of analyses and portrayal of results, timelines of work, supervision and guidance
received and socio-ethical considerations made.
Step 9: Write an abstractof the papermaking agenesis ofnature ofthe study, majorfindings
and summarizing the key findings, suggestions and conclusions.
Step 10: Using all these as inputs develop a paper for seminar presentation, deliver it, solicit
feedback and produce the final paper for publication by applying the given academic paper
documentation guidelines.
