Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

hermeneutical phenomenology?
(One student will volunteer to pray)
Good Morning, Ma’am!
Yes, Ma’am.
(The students will start picking up pieces of
paper and arrange their chairs)
(All students responded with a thumbs up)
Yes, Ma’am. We are all present.
Our lesson last meeting was about
hermeneutical phenomenology, Ma’am.
Yes, Ma’am.
3. Wow! Very Good. Do you have any

B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson
Activity I.
Let us take a look at the following picture.
What changes can you see?
None, Ma’am.
(The student will read the direction)
Phenomenology
Phenomenology
Non-Phenomenological Research
It is a philosophy that helps interpret human
experience to understand what it is to be
human.
4. Well done! The given picture shows how our
earth changes overtime. As you can see the
comparison between two picture shows the
before and after of earth.
C. Presenting examples/ Instances of the
new lesson
Let us have another activity, class. Your task
is to identify the impact or effect of each
given situation to the environment.
1. Illegal dumping
The earth is slowly deteriorating through
time.
The waters will become polluted.
5. 2. Illegal logging
3. Dynamite Fishing
The situation shows how human activities
affect the environment by contributing to
different kinds of pollution, and destruction of
ecosystem.
From the given activity, do you have any clue
what we will be discussing today?
Yes, you are somehow right. It is about
environment specifically human-environment
system. As we go further to our discussion we
will understand how humans impact the
environment as well as how environment
affects humans’ behaviour.
Kindly read the learning objectives of our
lesson today, Sarah.
Thank you so much, Sarah!
DURING THE LESSON
D. Discussing new concepts and practicing
New Skills #1
Loss of biodiversity and emissions of
greenhouses.
Dynamite fishing destroys both the food chain
and the corals where the fish nest and grow.
About environment, Ma’am
(a student will read the learning objectives)
6. With reference to your activity, do you have
any idea what is Human-environment?
Indeed! Humans have the capacity to interact
with its environment and we as humans and the
environment have that “mutual” interaction
with each other.
Let us define what human system is. Do you
have any idea, class?
Very Good! This include government policies,
industrial waste management, agriculture,
urbanization, culture, and tradition.
What about environment or environment
system, class?
Yes, Juan, what is environment system for
you?
Well-done! Humans depend on their natural
environment to survive. We need the
environment to provide energy, water, food,
and other materials.
So, Human-environment system is define as
the interdisciplinary approaches which study
the complex interactions among human and
environment systems. This theory follows the
idea that social and natural systems are
inseparable.
Human environment is the area that a human
lives in.
Human systems are the various institutions
and activities humans created in the society.
Environment includes water, air and land and
living organisms that surrounds humans.
7. Let us reflect on this human and nature cycle.
Who can share their understanding about it?
That is correct. Let us have a closer look how
humans impacts the environment and vice
versa.
For example:
What will happen if humans continues to use
plastics/plastic products and do not dispose
them properly?
You are right! Plastic bags are commonly used,
even though we know they can damage the
environment. What will be the consequences
to humans if the environment becomes
polluted?
What can human systems do like the
government to avoid this from happening?
Excellent answer! Every human system affects
environmental system, which then affects
human systems.
Did you understand how each systems are
interrelated, class?
Very Good, class!
The model shows that society shapes the
environment and that nature shapes society.
Animal choking, pollution, blockage of
channels, rivers and streams, and landscape
disfigurement (Answers may vary).
It harms human health, food production and it
will cause waters to become polluted.
Leaching of toxic chemical constituents into
food, drinks and water.
By creating laws and policies to protect the
environment.
Yes, Ma’am.
8. Do you still recognize these animals class?
Indeed, they are familiar because we might
saw them from animated movies. These
animals are extinct because of human
activities. In the last 100 years alone, more
than 1000 animals and plant species have gone
extinct as a consequence of human activities.
Give me an example of human activities that
has a negative impact to the environment?
Excellent! For example deforestation. If the
government have poor implementation of laws
and inefficient governance, what will happen?
Good answer! The loss of trees as a result of
deforestation can cause climate change,
desertification, soil erosion, fewer crops,
flooding, and increased greenhouse gases in
Yes, Ma’am! They are familiar.
Illegal logging, overpopulation, deforestation,
and over cropping.
Humans will continue illegal practices in
deforestation activities.
9. the atmosphere. We are already feeling the
effects of this impact.
Do you have any question before we continue?
If none, let’s proceed to the Important theorist
in Human-environment system.
E. Discussing new concepts and practicing
New Skills #2
The first theorist is Ure Bronfenbrenner. Do
you know the model he presented?
Very Good! This is his model called
Bronfenbrenner Ecological Systems Theory.
Bronfenbrenner saw the process of human
development as being shaped by the
interaction between an individual and his or
her environment.
He organized the structures in order of how
much of an impact they have on a child. The
first level is the microsystem level. What
examples can you see from this level?
None so far, Ma’am.
His theory is the Ecological Systems Theory,
Ma’am.
Family, school, and peers.
10. Correct! These are the things that have direct
contact with the child in their immediate
environment.
The next level is mesosystem. What do you
think is your understanding about mesosystem
based on the illustration?
Very well said! The mesosytem is where a
person's individual microsystems do not
function independently, but are interconnected
and assert influence upon one another.
What is the third level class? and what are
some examples of it?
Excellent! The neighborhood, parent’s
workplaces, parent’s friends and the mass
media. These are environments in which the
child is not involved, and are external to their
experience, but nonetheless affects them
anyway.
What level is next to Exosystem, class?
Very Good! The macrosystem can also
include the socioeconomic status, ethnicity,
geographic location and ideologies of the
culture.
Did you understand the theory of
Bronfenbrenner, class?
The mesosystem encompasses the interactions
between the child’s microsystems.
The third level is Exosystem which includes
extended family, neighbors, and mass media.
Macrosystem which includes laws, history
and social conditions.
Yes, Ma’am.
11. If so, the next theorist is Garret Hardin who
gained popularity for his essay “tragedy of the
commons.” Anyone who can recall the tragedy
of the commons from your lesson on Rational
Choice Theory?
You are right! But in the perspectives of
human-environment system, the tragedy of the
common entails how overpopulation impacts
the environment.
So, is everything clear, class?
Let’s proceed to the last theorist in Human-
environment system.
Ernest Burgess is known for his model called?
Correct! Concentric Zone model focuses on
the internal structure of cities in which social
groups are arranged spatially in a series of
rings. Can you identify respectively the five
zones?
Well done! The core analysis for this model is
that the farther the zone is from the CBD, the
more affluent the zone is. Did you understand
the concept of this theory, class?
Any questions before we proceed?
Tragedy of the commons refers to a situation
in which individuals with access to a shared
resource act in their own interest and, in doing
so, ultimately deplete the resource.
Yes, Ma’am
Concentric Zone Model
The five zones are central business district,
transition zone, blue-collar residential,
middle-income residential, and commuter
residential.
Yes, Ma’am Loren!
None, Ma’am.
12. F. Developing Mastery
Guide Question:
Do you know this person?
Where did you saw them?
What are they protesting about?
Do you think they are doing the right
thing?
G. Finding practical applications of
concepts and skills in daily living.
Let us watch a short video clip entitled
“Human Impact” In this video we'll learn about
how human activities negatively impact the
Mother Earth.
Link: https://youtu.be/Um-bo2MWDsQ
AFTER THE LESSON
H. Generalization
Let’s now have a short recap. Human-
environment system is about the
interrelationship of nature and human and how
these system affect each other.
What do we call the process of how human
systems affects environmental systems, which
in turn affect human system?
Feedback Loop
13. Very Good! What are the three concepts
presented by the three theorist we discussed?
You got it right! These theories class
elaborates how the environment around an
individual impacts their behaviour and also,
how humans affects the surrounding.
And that concludes our lesson today. Do you
have any questions and clarifications?
Very Good, class! Let us give ourselves an
Aling Dionisia Clap.
I. Evaluation
