Wrapping up a one week workshop on the topic: Designing new online support services for woman that have experience violence or threat of violence. This was the last presentation to introduce what we did to the audience on that day. February 2015

4. Theme for 2015
• Relationship between violence against
women (VAW) and digital media
à New technologies are used both to perpetrate violence
and to fight back (seek help/organize against), what does
this mean for the design of services that are digitally
based?

5. Scope and aims for the WS
• Brief 0.1: Create new possibilities for women who are
experiencing violence or are survivors, to reach out and
get in touch with a local NGO active in this field. How to
do this through digital means?
à We expect well defined concepts for new services (and
related tools) that the NGO can continue developing –or
take into use – after the WS
à Note: Campaigns are interesting and needed, but not
within the main focus of this WS

7. What we did
1. Lectures, readings and exercises to get familiar with
the theme (reflected in a learning diary).
2. Group work to develop a design concept(s) with a
pitching session in the end (presented with a 10 min
AV presentation per team).
3. Document and report our findings to others (In the
blog and in a manual).

8. What we learned
• Identify some of the challenges and possibilities of working and
designing together with a third sector organization (vs a
commercial organization or public sector) addressing a complex
situation
• Define, develop and evaluate a “conceptual design” proposal for
a digital service that can be used strategically by the organization to
develop and improve its service portfolio.
• Some concrete tools and vocabulary that can be used in
service design as it intertwines with digital media design and
development.

11. Peer Picnics
The Peer Picnic is a live peer meeting, where people can gather just as friends do. There could be for
instance five locations, where the picnic is organized regularly, eg. once per week. Events can be
shared via Facebook.
Because only very few NL clients shall have an access to a f2f support group, the casual peer
meetings would reach a lot wider group of women.
If some code language is needed because of possible stalkers, for instance “strawberry” could mean
the Park of Koff, “blueberry” Töölönranta etc. If needed, an online peer group could also start by a
joint picnic, so that the identity of every person is safely verified.

13. Spotify Survivor
Music is one of the most empowering things. Oppressed women can add their favourite pieces to the
“I will survive” playlist at the NL web site and play it in Spotify.
When women do not have much space outside home and cannot get into contact with peers, they can
feel the support of the NL community through the shared experience of the empowering music.
The guiding principle is that no-one is left alone. Even a minimalistic sign of peer support may help to
recreate the sense of dignity.

• Happy to be able to do this workshop!
• Surprised that no men came to the course
• Emotional and difficult topic that brought a lot of
synergy within participants and the organization.

• Interesting enough to think that we want to work more
with this topic in the future as part of our research.
