About 15% of searches in 2011 have been performed on mobile devices, with an estimated rise to one in every four by next year. And people aren't just searching Google: restaurants, cars, electronics, and even enterprise content are all being searched by people on the move.
How should we design Lucene- and Solr-powered search experiences for phones and tablets? To be sure, very different rules apply; small screens, slow connections, limited attention, and location awareness all afford very different user interfaces between desktop and mobile devices.
This talk will examine design patterns for mobile search, including approaches to faceted navigation, autocomplete, sorting, breadcrumbs, recent history, and bookmarks, as well as how these design patterns fit together as a whole.
This session will feature three major leading mobile marketing organizations revealing insights and live demonstrations of what works in mobile marketing. From building brand awareness to attracting leads and booking sales, this panel will show real market programs that deliver ROI.

Since 2009, Google has personalised all search results, with social signals playing an increasingly important role. Demand Side Platforms (DSPs), plugged into audience science tools, mean that display ads can now be targeted at individual impressions, based on a predicted user profile. And since earlier this year, the use of cookies has been regulated by the EU. How are these three things connected? What do they mean for marketers? And is any of this a good thing? This presentation aims to find out.

Positioning Content for Success, A Metrics Driven StrategyKevin Nichols
In organizations that publish content, metrics and key performance indicators are used to prove the worth of content strategy practices and solutions to management teams and decision makers. But ROI is not just about more products being sold, conversions of customers or operational efficiencies gained. This presentation will show that by using solid, hard metrics, content creators and managers can improve their content. Metrics necessary for the following optimized content experiences will all be addressed: content personalization, taxonomy and metadata, production and content lifecycle, content effectiveness, governance and, mobile.
In this pilot project I used the design process to tackle the brief: "Increase the number of drivers on shift for a particular rideshare company to meet the demands of customers in San Francisco, particularly at peak times."
Information Wayfinding: The Future of SearchTyler Tate

Presented at UXOxford on November 8, 2012.
As people interact with information across a growing number channels both digital (such as computers, tablets, phones) and physical (from print to the built environment), a new form of design is becoming increasingly important. The most successful businesses of today and tomorrow will be those who can provide cohesive experiences to their customers across the numerous channels that those customers demand. While designers are ideally suited to deliver on this challenge, we must expand our mindset and develop new tools in order to succeed.
This talk aims to achieve just that. You will learn about three characteristics of cohesive cross-channel experiences—division of labour, consistency, and continuity—and how to put those principles into practice using two design methods: the cross-channel blueprint and the experience map.
From Lookup to Learning: Search as a Long-term Activity – ECIR 2011Tyler Tate

zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex ProofsAlex Pruden
This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

28. 1. Content Trumps Controls
Most search controls
(such as sorting and
filtering) should be
displaced off-screen so
that search results take
center stage.
29. 2. Answers Over Results
For “lookup” infor-
mation needs, it’s often
more efficient to
directly answering the
user’s query rather
than force them to click
on a search result.
30. 3. Contextual Sensitivity
Strive for awareness of
the the user’s context,
such as their task,
location, and social
surroundings.
31. 4. Cross-Channel Continuity
The actions performed on any
particular channel should propagate to
all other channels of the ecosystem.
