This document discusses various design research methods with a focus on observation techniques. It describes how observation can be used to gather useful information for design by focusing on behaviors, use of objects and space. Both passive observation and engaged observation are discussed. The document also addresses documenting observations through notes, photos, video and maps, and how observations can then be abstracted and communicated to inspire design. Storytelling is presented as a method to convey observations.
