Example –
Rankine Coeffcient of Active/Passive Earth Pressure
Ka = {1- sin (f)}/ {1+ sin (f)} = tan2(45 - f/2)
for horizontal ground surface and smooth wall
and
Kp = 1/ Ka = tan2(45 + f/2)
Ref.: Geoguide 1
However, for sloping ground surface and
wall friction
1. Calculate Ka
Assume:
f’ = 27°
= 0°
= f’/2 = 13.5°
= 25°
2. Calculate Ka if
Fuf = 0.75 (AS4678)
Remember:
f* = tan-1(Fuf (tan27°)
 = f*/2
