Design Prototyping: Bringing Wireframes to Lifegoodfriday
See how "design prototyping" differs from other techniques, and learn how to determine when a prototype is needed. Understand how to tailor your prototype to a particular audience, gather techniques for bringing paper sketches to life, and how interactive sketching can fit in an Agile process.
Seif Ibrahim gives a presentation on his work as a senior software engineer and the tools he uses. He demonstrates a pasteboard sharing app called PasteIt.io that was developed using the MEAN stack and hosted on DigitalOcean VMs. The presentation provides details on the app's architecture and design, and recommends development tools including JetBrains IDEs, Visual Studio Code, Chrome, Firefox, BitBucket, and Visual Studio Team Services for source control. Seif also lists learning resources and productivity tools he utilizes.
Responsive Prototyping with WordPress and Atomic UI Libraries - anthonydpaul ...Anthony D. Paul
Put down that design tool! We typically turn toward graphic tools like Sketch for wireframing, then export into a presenter like InVision for usability tests. We try our darndest to get the menu functionality to “appear” like code, to fake responsive design, and to audit every hotspot linking to every screenshot. The irony is, we spend more time trying to get non-code looking like code than if we’d used code.
But wait, I’m not a dev! That’s cool. I’ve got you covered. Attendees will be given live demos of existing responsive frameworks, learn how to customize them, and walk away with a foundation for creating their own code prototyping kit (without needing to know how to code). This talk is written for information architects, UI/UX designers, product leads, and researchers.
What you’ll learn:
• How to use WordPress to create a content-managed prototype, regardless of what you intend to build your final site in;
• Which UI frameworks are cheapest and easiest to “wireframe” with, code-free; and
• Why this approach is simpler than many of your sketching tools, arriving at a better and more testable IA/content prototype more quickly.

Building an Open Source iOS app: lessons learned
Dec 12, 2016, Hacker Dojo (Santa Clara), 6pm
In this talk I'm going to talk about lessons learned from building Sensorama (http://www.sensorama.org), an Open Source sensor platform for data science. The main theme of the talk will be Open Source: what is great about it, what is bad and how you must become a part of the Open Source community to really move quickly and benefit from it. For this project, I did both the code and the design, so you'll have a chance to see how solo-developer deals with time/feature constraints, which tools I've used and what my approach towards development in this mode is. In other words: I'll tell you what I did to stay sane. If the iOS development were a walk in a dark city park, this talk may turn out to be your flashlight. App-icables: A Toolbox of Apps for InstructorsJonathan Bacon
This special interest group (SIG) was offered at #SIDLIT2016 held at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas. Each year new apps appear that instructors fine useful in the classroom and online. Of course, old favorites survive and offer improved versions. In this session, the discussion focused on five apps suggested by the presenter (such as Plickers and CamScanner) plus additional apps suggested by attendees.
Building a full-stack app with Golang and Google Cloud Platform in one weekDr. Felix Raab
This document discusses building a full-stack application called MemeMail using Golang and Google Cloud Platform within one week. It describes choosing Google Cloud over other cloud providers for its ease of use. It then discusses the frontend implementation using Vue.js with a simple state mutation approach. The backend is built with Golang on App Engine using Cloud services like Datastore and Cloud Build for CI/CD. It emphasizes keeping the architecture simple rather than over-engineering for an MVP within a tight deadline.
The document discusses Ruby on Rails, a web application framework. It provides an overview of Ruby and Rails, explaining that Ruby is an object-oriented programming language and Rails is a full-stack framework built on Ruby that follows the model-view-controller pattern. It also discusses how Rails emphasizes conventions over configuration and helps developers build applications quickly.
Class 4: Introduction to web technology entrepreneurshipallanchao
The document is an agenda for a class on user interface and user experience design. It includes topics like wireframing, branding, logo design, and an overview of UI/UX principles. Web app development using AngularJS, Yeoman, and Firebase allows for:
1) Building real-time web apps without servers or backend code through Firebase's scalable real-time backend.
2) Scaffolding Angular projects quickly using Yeoman to focus on application logic rather than infrastructure.
3) Deploying apps by generating static pages from Angular code through GitHub pages for zero-cost hosting.
Resilient Enterprise Design (Craig Villamor at Enterprise UX 2017)Rosenfeld Media
This document discusses the need for resilient enterprise application design. It advocates adopting a platform mindset by starting with specific solutions and generalizing, designing for the ecosystem not just features. A design system with guidelines, code, and components can create flexibility, consistency and scale. Influence over control is important - make it easy for users to do the "right" thing. Design principles should drive decisions and be prioritized, distinct and consumable. Consumerization and customization are increasingly important for enterprise applications.
How My Website Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the CloudMike Richwalsky
This document discusses how integrating cloud services can help solve technology issues and reduce costs compared to building infrastructure from scratch. It provides 10 ways to utilize the cloud, including content delivery, CMS asset hosting, forms, backups, media streaming, development sandboxes, and encoding/processing large amounts of data. Examples are given of colleges that saved money by using cloud services for video hosting, CMS testing, and project development. The near future of real web applicationsX.commerce
There is a lot of noise being made about HTML5 as the new web technology to use and markets for apps as the best way to sell products and distribute applications to our end users. In reality there is not much new about it - all we are doing is treating the web as a distribution and sharing platform and browsers as the software to run our applications on. In this talk Christian Heilmann of Mozilla shows how in the near future application installation and in-app payments can happen on the most distributed market there is - the internet and through your browser. You will see how the technologies we build web sites in got an upgrade to allow us to build light-weight and focused applications that allow our end users to reach their goals faster and in a more re-usable fashion than with traditional ecommerce. Browsers and hardware are becoming more powerful each day, it is time to use that power in a sensible manner.
Speed up the development and increase the app quality are the keywords for success. Good points, not so simple to achieve….
eXtreme Programming (XP) is an agile discipline of software development based on values of simplicity, communication, feedback, courage, and respect. The software is built around the needs of the customer through a continuous release of working software and creating a learning loop that dramatically improves the quality of the final product.
Some XP practices, like TDD and Continuous Integration, can benefit of the support of software tools and frameworks. In this session we will see how XCTest and Xcode Continuous Integration can streamline the process of the iOS XP team.
'Scenario Driven Design' allow programmers to make more usable APIs and avoid performance issues. REST principles are often misunderstood and programmers expose their raw data model without any logic. Think about your scenarios first !
A great idea can be built with almost any technology. The success or failure of your project has more to do with vision, leadership, execution, and market than technological choices.
Besides the vision, a lot of startups focus on culture. what isn’t often mentioned is that the technical decisions will have a direct effect on the company culture. Great things have been built with each of the technologies. But they do come with a culture.

All Change how the economics of Cloud will make you think differently about JavaSteve Poole
This document discusses how the economics of cloud computing will change how Java applications are developed. Cloud providers charge for computing resources on an hourly basis (e.g. $ per GB per hour), which means applications need to use resources efficiently. Java applications generally use more memory and have longer startup times than other languages. To be cost effective in the cloud, Java applications will need to reduce their memory footprint, decrease startup times, and be designed to fail and recover gracefully. The rise of APIs and microservices also requires changes to make Java more modular and efficient in constrained environments.

2. the commodity stack
• loosely translated: free (or cheap) shit you
can use to build products cheaply, quickly,
and reliably
• most important breakthrough in software in
recent years
3. examples
dev Ruby on Rails, jQuery
servers Amazon EC2
analytics Google Analytics
video YouTube, Vimeo
collaboration Google Docs, Dropbox, Skype
and so on...
6. “borrow” from products that
built it before you
If you’re building a... borrow from...
Q&A Site Quora, Stack Overflow
video site Vimeo, YouTube
social network Facebook
location app Foursquare, Gowalla
7. this happens everyday
all designers draw inspiration from others
cross-collaboration, cross-iteration to arrive at
best practices
8. conventions are no accident
- content section on the left, not right
- approx. twice as wide as sidebar
9. ...but great designers tweak
conventions to fit their product goals
Sidebar: related videos Sidebar: videos from
from different users the same user
10. inferred goals
Get as many people Allow the videographer
watching as many videos to express him/herself
as possible through portfolio
11. takeaways
• Borrow as much as possible from
established conventions, but tweak them to
fit your product’s goals
• Constantly analyze other products and the
logic behind every design decision
