1) Manfred von Richthofen, known as the "Red Baron", was a German fighter pilot during World War 1 who was considered the ace-of-aces of the war having shot down 80 enemy aircraft. 2) On April 21, 1918 while engaging British planes, Richthofen was shot down and killed at the age of 25. 3) Though a German pilot, Richthofen was honored by both sides and was buried with full military honors by British pilots in France, cementing his legendary status as one of the greatest fighter pilots of all time.
